Philip and Mary SPENCER, Derby
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 10:18 GMT (UK) »

Hi all

I'm having a nightmare with a few ancestors, and I'd appreciate any help.

My 3rd great grandfather, Philip Spencer (1825-1876) married Mary Atcheson (nee James) in 1846; she died around 1850 - he appears as a widower in the 1851 census living with his sister Catherine Brailsford (nee Spencer).  He then married Sarah Eyre in 1856 at Duffield parish church.

BUT.... he had two children, Philip born 1853 and Mary born 1855, in between. I can find no registration in civil BMD, and no baptisms in the IGI.

Can anyone help me find them?

Thanks

Hi

Could Philip & Mary be the children of Sarah Eyre from a previous marriage/relationship?

Hi Carol

Thanks - I had considered the possibility that they were Sarah's illegitimate children by Philip.

I suspect they were Philip's children for the following reasons:

The name Philip, following father and paternal grandfather's christian name.
Mary Spencer is named as Mary Kidd Spencer on her death cert. Her paternal grandfather, Philip Spencer was married to Mary Kidd.
Sarah Eyre was not married previously.  I would expect the two kids to have a different surname in the censuses, although not necessarily of course.
Can't find a Philip Eyre birth either!!

So... still baffled.

But thanks anyway.
