So whatever happened,happened between 1868-70 in Staffs.It may be the debt part is correct.They probably did a moonlight flit.I notice that when Louisa remarried she reverted to her original name so it couldn't have been that terrible.
The only thing that puzzles me is why the children kept the name Kirby when they could have taken the new father's name or reverted back also.
The story most probably concerns another family member & the story told to the children probably by their mother as David was dead by 1871.
Interesting story anyway.
