All,
I am attemptng to add all Kent Pubs into the London, Essex, Suffolk & Kent Pubs site - see http://londonpublichouse.com/
I struggle a little more with Kent, as I do not know the area as well as others, but I am winning. These are all historical. Feel free to help me out with any areas that you can see I have made mistakes.

Hello Iris,
I have a plethora of lists, thanks; it is finding the time to add it all. What I am really looking for is pictures, and personal histories to add to the site. The Gravesend site looks good, even if I have not yet signed in.

Hello Kevin,
I have an ancestor who was a publican at several pubs in Dover during the 19th/early 20th century, including “The Old Endevour”, “The Guildhall Vaults” again and the “Duke of York”. My family also had a pub which I believe was called 'The Golden Fleece" and was in the Old Pier district of the town, although as yet I have not been able to track down any information or records about it.
I have some pictures and an article from the 'Dover Express' which includes a photo.
I will log on to your link and send them.

Hello Susannah,
That would be brilliant. I am adding material rapidly to Kent at present, although I am sure there are massive gaps still. I am extremely good at credits, anything you like. I( work on area at a time, and time slicing between all the other areas that the site covers, e.g. Essex, London & Suffolk.

I have replied privately, thanks for pictures, but here is an entry for the Golden Fleece in 1858:
Stephen Saunter, Golden Fleece, Snargate Street
I should be updating Dover with the 1858 melvilles Directory later tonight, and this is all available from the Historical Directories site - see credits from bottom of many Trade listings for this site.

I think Dover is pretty well covered.
I have quite a lot of info/pictures of local pubs on my Dover website (www.eastkent.freeuk.com), having had permission from the author (Barry Smith) to copy and update "By the Way", which gives information on every pub he found in the historical records of the town.
I am still working on this part of the site, adding pictures of extant buildings where they can be located with certainty. There is a picture of the Old Endeavour (still open). The Duke of York was at 71a Snargate Street. The Guildhall Vaults were at 2 Bench Street. The Golden Fleece closed in 1870.
Another site also has information from Smith, but I can't remember the site address at the moment.
I have also got pictures of Deal pubs on the same site.
I welcome any contributions to the site, which currently has around 300 pages and 800 pictures of Dover, Deal and the surrounding areas.

Hello Bill,
Looks interesting. I am surprised rootschat allow you to advertise in your postings, though! I cover more than just Dover and Deal, the site at http://londonpublichouse.com/ covers most of Kent, Suffolk, all of Essex and a vast amount of London, nearly 15,000 Pubs in all, plus more.
As many families were often victualling families, there is a good chance that they were involved in Pubs in a variety of towns and counties. I will never be able to cover the entire country, but the South East and London appears to be a working possibility.

Not knocking what you are doing Kevan - it's quite a project! I haven't even thought about trying to track down all the licensees; with up to 200+ pubs in operation in Dover at any one time, it would take too much of my time.

just found this picture of THE PADWELL,STONE STREET,nr SEVENOAKS
the person in it died in 1932 so was quite a while before
good luck in your quest for old pub pics
p.s was there in the 90's its changed quite a bit

Brilliant, many thanks. I did a quick search for Harrison in the Telephone Directories in Strood, and there are a couple of entries in the early 1950's for the Railway, but nothing else - shame.
