An update on the Golden Fleece, 55 Snargate Street, Dover; I am sure I could not find half of these entries previously!

Hi Kevan,
Thanks for the new information.
However I've looked at the link where these appear and don't know how to expand/access them to see the whole entry.
Could you help please?
(Sorry to be thick)

The following site is a very good source for recent photographs of old pubs:

Roger,
That's all there is that I can find for the Fleece / Golden Fleece; should there be more?

I also like the Images of England site, and added to my listing of the same, which is missing loads.

Kevan,
The heading  says -
Year/Publican or other Resident/Relationship to Head and or Occupation/Age/Where Born/Source.
I can only see year/name and  directory not the middle part.
I agree about the photo site from English Heritage, I've just signed up as well.

Rog, I think there would only be entries for the middle parts if they were census references but it looks to me as if Kevan only has directory references for that pub hence date and name.

Ah,
I understand now. These are all Trade Directory entries, and do not give very much information. BUT, with Directories, it gives an idea of whom to look for in the census, and I have added an entry for 1861, which does have this information. You may need to refresh the page to see additions.

Thanks Kevan.
My interest is that an ancestor of mine, John Matson (1835-1888), owned several pubs in the Pier District of Dover including the “Golden Fleece”  and lastly owned a Greengrocers shop in Park Street, Dover.
However as yet I don't know the names of the other pubs he owned.
If anyone can help it would be great.
1871 census shows  John as a Farmer of 66 Acres at Little Palmstead Farm, Stelling. Has 3 “Farm Servants”. Gives birthplace as Alkham.
1881 census shows aged 46 and gives birthplace as Frogham, Kent. The family is living at 3 Park Place, Dover.
