Is There Such a Surname as MOTHERSFIELD?
« on: Monday 29 October 07 05:39 UTC (UK) »

Huh  I'm looking to see if there is such a surname as Mothersfield? I'm looking for the wife of Henry Bailey. According to the 1841 census Mary was born abt 1796 in Drinkstone, Suffolk. Others on Rootschat have looked up marriages of a Henry Bailey and his wife Mary. They cam up with two Mary', one being Mary Butterick and then Mary Mothersfield. The one with Mothersfield sounds like the one I'm looking for. But the problem is, there seems to be no Mary Mothersfield, much less anyone with that surname, period. Could it possibly be that the surname is not Mothersfield, but refering to her mother' surname of Field. I'm looking for the surname of Mary who according to the 1841 census is living in Wicken, Cambridgeshire with her children Henry, Jane, Robert and Sarah. Any help with this confusion over surnames, would be much appreciated.

It appears to have been the name of a place in County of York, England. (http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/ENGLISH/interloan/c-rg22fb.htm - see entry for Fanny LEE).  Maybe still there?

Often people took their names from the places they originally came from, a long time ago.

I'm tempted to agree that Mothersfield is NOT a real surname.
Ancestry yields only one entry - the above marriage - in their entire database.

To be perfectly honest I'm not convinced it was a place name in Yorkshire either?  Undecided

Dave, just out of curiosity - did you notice on the Ancestry entry the small 'w's' following the names of Henry and Mary?

I think it implies widow and widower? Totally unrelated I know, but thought it worth a mention .. ..

Strange name, Boyds index only reveals one that comes close.

Just checked the source of the Mothersfield Entry on
familysearch.

Bishop's Transcipt for the Archdeaconry of Sudbury,

Maybe an idea to look at the oriiginal to see if correct surname input

The IGI has an 1875 marriage for a Celia MATHERFIELD (the only occurrence of the name) in Brotton, Yorkshire.

And the marriage posted previously of Mary MEATHERFIELD (again the sole occurrence) to Anthony CHAPMAN in 1780, Prittlewell, Essex.

Hi

The vital records index which relates to the BT's entry on the igi states that Henry Bailey was previously married. Notes say Widower, additional data in original. The notes probably relate to Henry though. FHL Film NO 951463.

The Bishop's transcripts are themselves a transcription, which could be incorrect. Finding the original could be useful - although the IGI item does not contain a parish - it may be included on the BT film?

As the Mothersfield/Bailey marriage took place in Soham, the following maybe Henrys first marriage.

Hen BAILEY
Elizabeth Webb NEWTON

1807 - Soham

and Camdex burials reveals

Elizabeth Bailey bur. 1815 aged 26yrs, w. of Henry. at Soham.

Looks like she could have died in childbirth

LOL. Thankyou Suffolk Sue. You don't know what you just did. Your last post:

I have Baileys on two sides. I Jane Bailey who's parents were the topics of the above discussions. Jane is the mother to my g-g-grandmother Susan Weaver. Susan Weaver married a Charles Cheer. Charles is my g-g-grandfather. Charles' mother was a Margaret Bailey, whose father was also a Henry Bailey and Elizabeth Newton, the couple Suffolk Sue just mentioned in her last posting to this discussion. So Sue you just helped again. Thanks. And thanks to everyone else in helping to figure out the Mothersfield issue.

I was wondering about that same name as well. I have it written down. All I can do is play around with it and see what comes up. Thanks for the help everyone. You're awesome.
