Where did they Teach?
« on: Monday 29 October 07 10:31 GMT (UK) »

My Great Grandmother MARY WRIGHT and her sister-in-law ANNIE WRIGHT used to teach/run a school close to, if not at Coryates sometime between 1900 - 1920 and then I believe Annie went on to teach at a school in Weymouth. Is anyone able to assist with confirming this information in any way. Register of school and teachers! Coryates came under the parish of Portisham, but the records transcribed by Peter do not cover this period currently. Any information would be appreciated.

Where and when were Mary/Annie born?
Do you have them on the 1901 census?
Were they teaching at that time - if so where?

The 1901 has a page for 60 Walpole St Melcombe Regis which has a Mary Ann Wright 45 and sister Hannah 34 both b Chippenham Wilts.  Neither are shown as a schoolmistress (shown as living on own means) but there are 2 other entries on the same page with occupations as "national school mistress" and "school mistress" - neither are surname Wright

Hello,

In the 1901 census both:
Mary Jane Wright aged 35 Teacher at Boarding school born Paddington
and
Annie Wright aged 25 Teacher at Boarding school born Marlybone

were visiting Thomas & Mary Jones at 70 Queens Road, Bedwelty, Monmouthshire, Wales.  I have no idea who or why they were visiting the Jones.

Does that assist in anyway?

Hi

Unfortunately no.  I had hoped they were managing a school in 1901 and that would have provided a lead re: address etc

If they were in Wales on a visit in March 1901 - it doesn't suggest they were actively teaching at that time - unless it coincided with the Easter hols
