Hi
I'm interested in two illegitimate births in Tyneham.
The first was Ann Cox, baptized 17 Aug 1823, daughter of Mary Cox.
The second was Jane Cox, baptized 2 Oct 1825, daughter of Eliza(beth) Cox.
I believe Mary and Elizabeth were sisters, both daughter of Thomas and Edith Cox. Elizabeth subsequently married John Elms in Tyneham, and I wonder if he was Jane's father??
Mary never married, and lived with various in-laws until she died in 1873. Her daughter Ann I believe went to Everingham in Yorkshire, and if so she is my 3rd great grandmother.
On the marriage certificate of Ann Cox to George Pears in 1857 she gives her father's name as Charles Cox. Her census entried variously give Tyneham or Lulworth as her birthplace.
Does anyone know of any bastardy papers where the reputed fathers may be named?

Hi,
Have you looked at the Tyneham page on www.dorset-opc.com? Might find some useful baptisms there. Any bastardy papers might be held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester; could be worth an email/phone call.
Not sure if you are aware that Tyneham is now a ghost village having been "borrowed" by the Army in WW2 and not yet returned!

hello
There is a settlement examination of Mary Cox singlewoman in Tyneham on 1 May 1823. The Dorset Record Office reference is PE/TYN/OV/1/2. This appears to be followed by bastardy order on 25 Oct 1824 involving Charles Elmes in East Stoke (reference PE/ESK/OV/3/1)

Nanny Jan, Deborah - thankyou so much - you're a pair of superstars. 
The online Tyneham transcripts are terrific (and yes, I was aware of the abandonment of the village), and I will certainly contact the Dorset record office about the settlement and bastardy papers.
At least she gave a half truth on her marriage certificate; you want to know how long I've been trying to find a Charles Cox?! Charles Elmes - interesting, since Elizabeth Cox married a John Elmes in Tyneham in 1832. Wonder why Charles and Mary didn't marry.

Tyneham is actually an interesting place to visit.
It's mostly intact and the buildings are maintained, the army open it to the public for a few days each year.
Only been once, but it was a memorable day.
Of course coming from Poole originally I have to admit that Dorset and the Purbecks especially are a beautiful part of the country.
