To add, the BC indexes are freely available on the archives website:
http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm
Ancestry do not have anything which isn't on the above (in fact, the death index at the above link goes to 1986, not 1979), so there's no point in paying them for it. (They do this with a great number of freely available databases, although I suppose it is useful if you're not sure where somebody ended up and you want to search everything at once).
Furthermore, although you can purchase the death certificate from the above, several people on the BC RAOGK will do lookups, which will cost you a great deal less if you are willing to send concealed cash or can send a check in $CA (I think for the price the bank would have charged me for a money order, I was willing to take a chance on the cash). I believe I got three done at once for less than a tenner...
Also note that a search on the BC archives "textual records" sometimes turns up hits for things such as probate/estate records.
