Chesham Parish Register - HARDING

I am researching my late mother's family, Harding and have traced the family back to Chesham via census returns and marriage certificates.

I have recently purchased transcripts of the Chesham Register of Baptisms & Burials 1743 - 1760 & Marriages 1743 - March 1754 and although I have found several references to Harding, none can be positively match to my line.

I think I need to find the records that follow these, but can find no reference to them being transcribed anywhere. Is this something you can help me with or perhaps point me in the right direction?

I am looking for

baptism John Harding, b. c1789 and any siblings, plus

marriage of John's parents, James Harding b. c 1759 & Mary Darvill

Note, my Hardings were basketmakers in Amy Lane Chesham - John married Mary Price in 1810.

I don't have any baptism records for Chesham, but I can help with the marriage -

31 Aug 1783 Jas Harding & Mary Darvell

No other details, I'm afraid.

Hi Jill,

Thanks for taking the time to check this out - this matches what I found via IGI. Unfortunately, the IGI is also giving me conflicting records for John's siblings and is causing quite a bit of confusion.

Where did you come across the marriage record? I have another contact who found the record in the Bucks Marriage Database, showing William Harding & Matthew Archer as witnesses. The earlier Chesham Parish records I bought show a William Harding married 1752 who could well be this witness and even related, possibly James father.

However, it seems there are a few families of Harding in the Chesham area around this time. I figure I probably need to see the later Parish records to solve the conundrum.

I got the marriage from a CD of marriages PRs for various parishes available from S&N Genealogy Supplies.

And you're right, there did seem to be a heck of a lot of Hardings in Chesham.

I can look in the registers for you as you have dates but i can't do it before Wednesday.
Yes, Harding is a very common name in Chesham [if you know any history of Chesham you will know about Thomas Harding - a marytr burnt at the stake]Darvell is also a  very common name in chesham

Thank you for your look up offer.

What I have so far, from the IGI, is James Harding and Mary Darvill were married on 31 August 1783 and had two other sons, William who was baptised on 4 April 1784 and James who was baptised on 4 December 1785.

I would like to confirm these marriage and baptisms and hopfully discover James Harding and Mary Darvill's parent's and if they had any other children or siblings.

I have at last been able to look for your hardings.
I can confirm the marriage of james harding to Mary Darvel. They were married by Banns and they were both 'of this parish'
 date 31st Aug 1783.
both signed and the witnesses were .. William Harding and Mathhhew Archer.
Children
William bap April 4 1784. born Nov 18?
James bap Dec 4 1785. born Nov 6
John   bap Aug 31 1788, born July 7?
Joseph bap 25 Aug  1793  [unfortunatly I can't read date of birth]

I had a look for James Hardings birth from 1750 - 1765 but could not find it.
it was only a quick look so I will go back and have a 'proper look' as soon as possible.

I too am interested in your Hardings from Chesham. Myself and Graham have swapped notes in the past as we are pretty sure that we are both desecended from a pair of Harding brothers though we dont know their parentage!

I desecend from John Harding b. 1754 in Chesham who married Hannah Wilton. Their son James Harding b. 1785  married Mary Ann Burch.

They had a son William Harding b 1826 who married a Susannah North b. 1829 and their son James William Harding was my great grand gradfather.

Any information you can help with would be greatfully recieved. In particular i am trying to find a birth record for John Harding b. 1754.
