Hi Kas,

first things first ...the marriage

I've searched the full GRO index and there is indeed an Emma Johnson on the same reference

Royston Dec 1865 3a 377

So that looks good for that one. There is a William Clark and William Dewe on the same reference, so possibly for some reason he was known by both names and your search for family will have to take both into account.

Marriage - yes, Emma is in FreeBMD as P277 .... strange it hasnt been double checked, as it stands out on that Page as the only Royston one. Even the image in FreeBMD is clearly 377.

Royston deaths

Mar 1868   Lizzie Dew  age 1
Mar 1871   William John Dew   age 1
Jun 1871   Thomas Dew  age 0
Mar 1873   Walter Dew   age 0   + others

So they could all be dead.
The rest of the family is now in one place.

The 'Dew Clarks' are all living together in Hormead in 1891 (Alfred is 17).
Even grandfather Thomas has that surname.

IGI

Baptism  9 Jun 1816
Gt Hormead, Herts
Thomas Dew or Clark son of John Dew and Mary Clark

In 1841 Thomas was living as 'Clark':

HO107/443/10
Han St, Gt Hormead
Thos Clark, 24, ag lab, Y
Mary C, 25, Y
John C, 4, Y
Wm, 2, Y
Mary C, 55, Y

..but by 1851 the family was 'Dewe'.

He may have changed to Dew once his mother had died.

thanks richard
it certainly looks that way odd but not unheard of. maybe his dad had died and as i have found on the odd occasion the widow reverts back to using her maiden name. or maybe his parents never married.
still it gives me a new generation for my tree.i do try to go up and down the families as much as is possible in all my families.
