Taaffe - Rathescar Cross, Dunleer, Co Louth
« on: Monday 25 February 08 04:30 GMT (UK) »

Hi there, I am trying to find information on my ggg grandfather James Taaffe (born approx. 1807) who married Margaret Barron (no date found).  They had together 3 children
Patt baptised 7 February  1843 at Rathescar Cross
John     "          13 January 1846  at Rathescar Cross
Francis   "         21 October 1848  at Rathescar Cross (my gg grandfather)

Margaret Taaffe (nee Barron) died 17 April 1849 at Rathescar Cross
James Taaffe 18 April 1877 at Ardree

Francis at some time came out to Australia and married here in January 1875.

I have been at a standstill for many years as I cannot find any information on James Taaffe or indeed margaret.  They were Roman Catholics.

Hoping someone on this site is able to help.
Thankyou
maureen

A quick search of the new online database for the County Louth records for Dunleer parish shows a James Taaffe and Margaret Barron married in 1842. To get a copy of the record and the exact information contained, you will have to purchase to view and print it.

louth.brsgenealogy.com

There is a possibility that James may be a brother (or undoubtedly a close relation) of my great-great-great grandfather, Thomas Taaffe, who was born in 1804.

I did not find a James Taaffe born in 1807 for Dunleer. Only one born in 1812. There was a James Taaffe born in 1804 in Ardee.

Thank you so much for your reply.  I did get a copy of the marriage record from Louth County online - it gave me no details of their parents - it only gave me me 2 witness names so it led me nowhere.
I downloaded the 1804 Ardee baptism and it gave me 2 parents John taaffe and Bidy Commons and of course sponsors name but I have no way of knowing if this is indeed the James Taaffe as on his marriage certificate (record online) it does not show me parents names.  James died in Ardree so I feel the 1804 may be correct, but cannot go on assumptions.  james had a son thomas to his second wife so there could be a connection!!!
If you have any idea where I could find out James details I would be grateful.
thanks - Maureen

My Thomas was the son of Patrick Taaffe and Mary Hand. I found the them on his baptismal certificate. The earliest baptismal records for Dunleer Parish are 1790.  So I knew I would not find his father in Dunleer. Luckily for me, I found him in Ardee. There are so many Taaffe's in Louth as that is where they originally settled after they came from Wales with Strongbow in the 12th century.

At least you now have a marriage date for James and Margaret. If you play around with the search function a bit on there, you might possibly be able to find Margaret's parents as well. I did this and found a child of Thomas that no one in my family ever knew existed as she died prior to their emigrating to the US. I am not sure if they have the death certficate for James, but it may be worth a shot to see what information is on it.

I am hoping that they improve their search function to possibly include parent's names as that will be much more helpful in finding relevant records.
