Hi,

I don't have access to the PR's for St. Marys, but a word of caution.  I got hooked up for AGES on entries for 'St. Mary's Southampton' when it turned out to be St. Mary's,  Hound ( Netley just outside Southampton)  So if you don't find him there, try Hound.

Happy hunting,

Debbie

Hhhhhmmmmmm...what's that large building that looks like a church in St. Mary's Southampton?   Wink  I've searched the PR's myself, it's a church AND a district.  I live in Southampton & am happy to help you with any brick walls, if I can Smiley  If a birth took place in Hound/ Netley, the registration district would also be Southampton.

Happy hunting,

Debbie

Thats interesting Debbie, as IGI does not list it but I seem to recall seeing a photo of it now you mention it, has it been renamed do you know? My brickwall is my 3x Great Grandfather was William Knight who married Rachel Crisdee on 12 Oct 1807 at Millbrook Parish Church. I went to Winchester Records Office and this was the only record I could find. All the children were baptised at the Above Bar Independant and as you may know, much of the churches records were destroyed in WWll.

Hi,  It's due to the IGI that I got 'stuck' for absolutely ages.  I'm not totally sure how the Church was named or renamed, if at all.  Here's a link to St. Marys Hound
http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/trg/focsle/stmary.htm

Now I've just pulled out my paper file which has certificates & copies of PR's.  One of the births in  1899 has the address as Netley, parish of Hound, sub district St. Mary Extra (which is now in Sholing Southampton), registration district Southampton.  The earlier PR's I have simply say 'Hound'  but if you look at the link I sent, it states St. Mary's Hound.  Very confusing but maybe someone on here could put us right!!!

As for St. Mary's church in St. Mary's Southampton, I don't know enough about it to say if that's been renamed or not.  But I do know I researched for someone in the States a while back & checked PR's early 1800's.  As the area is St. Mary's, I doubt a change of name would've happened there.

But yes, I'm well aware of the devastation that the WW11 bombings had on the churches in Southampton...such a terrible shame.

Anyway, I hope that helps but it may well have caused more confusion!! Smiley

Idea!  If you start a new thread about your Gx3 grandfather, you may get some answers.  I don't want to hijack kpnuts listing.

Just to finish off the tangent  Wink the church of St Mary's in Southampton has always been called St Mary's.  The current building is the sixth.  The first was apparently built in 634 AD and the fifth one was destroyed in WWII.  The present one was finished in 1956.  The church was never within the city walls - they were All Hallows (All Saints which was destroyed in 1940), St Michael's (still there - very tall spire on a lowish building and the only church not to have been hit in WWII !), Holy Rood - (destroyed in 1940 but the tower is still there and serves as a memorial to the merchant navy), St John's and St Lawrence.

St Mary Extra was a chapelry to St Mary's but became a separate parish in 1881.

St Mary Sholing was a parish formed in 1866 from Hound (which happens to be dedicated to St Mary the Virgin) and St Mary Extra.

The registers of Hound, St Mary's, St Mary Extra all date back to the late 17th century.

And while this may be helpful to some people - it doesn't find George Read  Sad

My apologies

Nell

Hi,

From your other post here,

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,263625.msg1489234.html#msg1489234

it seems George was in the Navy. Have you seen this medal card which gives his DOB as 11 Oct 1856?

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0254/

The only George/Male READ/REED/REID I could find born in Hampshire in Q4 1856 is the one found by Indaloman,

George REED  Dec Q 1856  Southampton  v.2c  p.15
