Allegations and Transcripts
« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 08:46 UTC (UK) »

Hi all
this is not exactly a look-up request,,,, but in an attempt to do my own marriage look-ups I got hold of a C.D. ;  "Allegations for marriage Licenses in the Archdeaconary of Sudbury, Suffolk 1684-1839 ".
Perfect I thought,,,, but after printing 100's of pages and doing untold damage to my eyes, searching each and every entry for Rogers's and all other known sirnames in my research, I discovered, that, of the many entries there should be, I had found only a handfull !!!  Tongue  In fact, there doesn't seem to be that many entries for all Saints and st Gregory, Sudbury amongst the pages. Am I missing the point somewhere along the line here ?  Huh
Also, I have had some good results after obtaining copies of pages from the Bishops transcripts, from various kind people at various county records offices. Are these available in book or C.D. format anywhere?
I hope that someone can help me on this matter.
all the best

Hi Pete

An obvious point, but I feel I should mention it. The CD you have is only relevant to marriages by licence. Most people were married by banns.

Hi Dave and SM
stupid me, Banns are totally different to Licence, but still i didnt realise this, thanks for pointing it out to me. I'm glad that there is a reason for the missing entries I was searching for. I guess you learn something knew each day in this game.
I assume then that BANNS marriage entries are only recorded on Parish records and on the Bishops transcrips. Sorry for being such a greenhorn.
