I think that you would be right Jenn - Sophia appears to have been registered in England as Georgina Sophia, Sept q 1853, so she would not yet be 2.

It seems that young John's birth (at Portland?) has not been registered.
edit- just spotted your other post with the birth - well spotted Jenn  Grin

Hello to all of you  Smiley

You are absolutely amazing  Kiss.  I can't begin to tell you how much time i have spent trying to find this information.

Jenn: It is definitely them!  Is Birmingham the place they left from or the name of the ship?

Christine:  Your right! Sophia was born in UK in 1853 named Georgina Sophia.

Dee:  All of those children!   Roll Eyes

May i ask if you would be able to verify for me that John Hardley was born in Cambridgeshire UK 1832. Given that he may have been Hartley i'm now not so sure.

Kind regards
Kaye

Hello  there

So Sorry  I  just  have made  that clearer...  yes  the Birmingham  is  the  name  of  the ship.

I  don't know  if  you  are aware of this  but  you purchase and dowload a certificate  from Victoria  on  line paying but credit Card

long link to online.justice.vic.gov.au/

A victoria birth certificate for one of  those children will give  you a very good  lot of  information

this is  what  you will find on a Victorian Birth Certificate
Births
Date and place of birth;
name of child and whether present or not;
name of parents (including mother's maiden name);
occupation of parents;
ages and birthplace of parents;
date and place of marriage of parents;
previous children of their marriage noting living or deceased;
signature,
description and address of the person who gave the information;
names of witnesses;
date and place of registation.

So  it  is  well worth the  cost  of  one on  the birth certificates for one of  the children  born in Victoria  if  funds permit.

It is the  only  way  to  officially verify  who  the parents are.

kind regards Jenn

It is probably just a case of mistranscription for the index in both cases - the shipping and John's birth - Hartley being a much more common name and easily mistaken for Hardley.  (I didn't even notice that is what it said on the shipping when it was posted by Jenn!)

The later birth certificates might name previous children, I have one from 1864 that did so, but registrars varied when they added the extra detail.

Hi

The shipping record will have where they're from.  They came assisted passage.

I'll check it out at the library for you.

Hello Dee,  Smiley

Re: Your post to me on 31 Oct 2007.

John HARDLEY aged 2 born in PORT died 1857 Ref: 5287

PORT -  Is it abbreviation for Port Melbourne or Portland or some other place? There are quite a few Port .... in Victoria.

Many thanks

Hi Kaye,
I am pretty sure that PORT is the abbreviation for Portland.

I am sure one of the Victorian Rootschatters will correct me if I am wrong.
