Hi All,
Dee, I too think PORT is Portland, but am not positive.
I have Ian Marr's Cemetry Headstone index for the region and have checked for Hardley, but nothing to see.
I then wondered Portarlington and loooked at the Geelong district cemetery site [zades] and again no go
The family do seem to have moved about a bit with births at Collingwood, Bendigo and Portland  [if we are right]

By the way.  Has anybody noted what an extraordinarily unusual name Gamersway/Ganersway is?

Georgina seems to be the only one on record and I note the only google hits for the name relate to postings which you, Kaye, have put on boards around rootscat and such.

would be interesting to know the origins of the name.

Hi Sue and Kaye
Little John was born in Portland in 1855....then died in PORT in 1857....so I would be fairly confident that the PORT referred to Portland.

That's the only census the name appears with the Gamersway spelling. In 1851 Georgiana appears with her mother ......

HO107/1478/346/10

St George Hanover Square
3 Warwick Row

Ann Gameriway 42  Widow Lodging House keeper born Dundee Scotland
Georgiana Gameriway 15  born Windsor, Berkshire, England Daur Assistant

They are the only two with the name in the 1851 Census  ....and it is recorded that way.

There is a family of 8 by the name of Gamersal in 1851 in Yorkshire and 2 by that name in 1871.

Like you, Sue....am curious about the origins of the unusual name.   Wink  Cheesy

Hello  there
Dee
I  did notice  on  the  1841  census  the Gamersway  family  was  living at  the same address as the Baldick family  not  when  you  click  to see if  others listed on  page  both Mary Baldick  and  Ann Gamersway  are listed  as  birth  place Ireland??  so  that  is confusing  isn't it

And the only other one I have found was the death of a James Gamerswaye in 1846 Westminster!

Things like this are so intriguing!  Wink  Cheesy

It's certainly a most unusual name.  Might it be a version of the (more common) names GAN(N)AWAY or GAM(E)SBY or variants of those?

Some FreeBMD names similar to GAMERSWAY (apart from Georgiana's marriage) are:
GAMERSWAYES James death Dec 1846, Westminster (already mentioned)
GAMSWAY Robert marriage March 1847, Gateshead
GAMMONSWAY William (58) death Dec 1867, Pancras
GAMMERSWAY Ann (60) death June 1875, St Geo H Sq (already mentioned)
GAMMONDSWAY Ann (70) death, March 1871 Greenwich
GAMMAWAY Julia Olivia marriage, March 1888, Dartford
GAMMONSWAY Elizabeth Ann marriage, June 1898, Houghton
GAMMONSWAY Sarah Jane marriage, June 1898, Holborn

From the IGI there's only? an LDS submission for Thomas GAMMAWAY m 1797 Westminster St George Hanover Square.

Some - very few - Google hits for GAMMONSWAY.

There's a place called Garmondsway in Co Durham.

Ah now!!!

Could this be it!

There are quite a few hits in the IGI for GARMONDSWAY and variants ...

And several for GARMONSWAY, GARMANSWAY, GARMENSWAY, GARMINSWAY, GARMINGSWAY, GARMONDSWAY, GARMOUSWAY on FreeBMD.

And Google hits.

Weird.

Hi Dee, Sue, Jenn, Jap,  Smiley

I applied for an online image certificate of birth for Mary Ann Hardley.  Born 12th March 1861 East Collingwood.
Father:  John Hardley born Cambridgeshire 1832.
Mother: Georgina Gamersway born Windsor near London 1836.

I now have confirmation that John and Georgina are the Hardleys i am researching.

Thanks Dee for the 1851 info on Ann and Georgina.  I wonder where Ann was born - Scotland or Ireland   Undecided.
In the 1841 census she stated Ireland as her place of birth.

On the 1852 marriage certificate Georgina stated Father's name was John - deceased.

With the variants in the spelling of surnames and birthplace, for a novice such as myself it is so confusing.

Gamersway is an unusual name.  I must admit it sounds Irish to me.  Between Hardley Harley Hartley Hawdley etc etc and Gamersway, Gumersway, Ganersway etc etc, no wonder i am going grey and sometimes would like to tear my hair out.

Once again, thank you all,

Take care,
Kaye   Wink

Hi Sue

I should have mentioned in my previous post.  The family certainly moved around a lot. They went to New Zealand about 1862.

I think maybe they came out to Victoria in the goldrush days.  Bendigo was a big gold area.  Then around the 1860's gold was found in Dunedin New Zealand and John had relatives there so i guess that is why they moved to NZ.

Interesting findings, Kaye.
Great to have the satisfaction of everything confirmed.
I do wonder what took them to Portland.  No gold there that I know of.
Georgina's father  "John, deceased"  I wonder where his death could be found.  Perhaps it just predates registration in England being very soon after Georgina's birth and before 1837. And Ann the mother is alone in 1841 so that presumably is the time- frame.

Hi Kaye

Finally got the SLV.

Passenger List for the "Birmingham" which sailed from Plymouth 27th September 1854 and arrived at Portland Victoria 6th January 1855

John HARTLEY 22 from Middlesex Occupation: Carpenter
Georgina HARTLEY 19 from Middlesex
Georgina HARTLEY 1
Religion: Church of England.  John & Georgina were stated as both being able to read and write.
Came on own account - in other words paid the bounty themselves.

Cheers
