Mormons travelling to Utah
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 14:23 GMT (UK) »

I have ancestors travelling to Utah 1884.
In a copy of Personal Accounts - Moron Immigration Index, it states 'We landed in New York Harbor, we were transferred the same day to the Lake Erie Railroad Station and placed aboard the train leaving at 8.20pm Sept 10th, arriving Salt Lake City September 17th.'
Would they have travelled to Utah by train or would it have been a wagon train?

Thank you

The "golden spike" which marked the completion of the cross continent railway to Utah was driven in 1869.  They were thus in all probability travelling on the railway.

Just imagine travelling for seven days and nights across all that new country.
What a wonderful adventure!

cathaldus, newf, Indaloman and David,

Thank you all for your replies.

A great adventure, but not when you're eight months pregnant.

My ancestors also had 14 children 10 born Weber, Ogden, Utah, and sure that there are relatives still living in the area.

Don't forget they probably had a long sea voyage before even getting on that train.

According to the letters written, they left Liverpool 30th August and arrived New York 10th September, so wasn't too bad.

Eleven days across the Atlantic would be long enough if the weather was rough, they were seasick, the food wasn't great...

Again according to the Personal Accounts of the voyage is states:

31st August 1884 There are several cases of seasickness this morning, although we have a smooth sea. The weather is dull, and showery at times.
........the most important game of all was played three times a day in the saloon, and to see the way tables were loaded and cleared again was very suggestive of a famine overtaking us, should anything occur to render our voyage a little longer than usual. Guion & Company fully sustained their reputation for the excellence of their tables, and not a single complaint has been by any one. The viands were of the first quality, which is a matter of course with ships of the Guion Line, the tables were all filled and appetites were of as good quality as the viands. (Plenty of good wines also)

So not too bad eh?

Wouldn't it be better to put them in the surname interests table?  The link is via "Your Surname Interests" found at the foot of every page.
