Undecided Sorry maizcl, havn't a clue except to say is there a death for a Harriett Walsh, a mistake with name on the death cert?

Maybe something else happened to her soon after the marriage, she would have been 36 in 1888,.......while Florence the mother of the children would have been 16 (hmm Undecided) at the birth of the first child in 1889. It looks as though Florence and Henry were 'together' as her death is registered as Hardley.

Odd co-incidence that both girls have the same surname, were they related in any way, cousins maybe?  Undecided

Anyone else want to hazard a guess at what's going on here?

Maizcl

You may have to buy some transcripts (which are cheaper than certificates) to sort out the issues here
The death for Florence in 1918 should give her husband and children. If you can find the death for Henry it could be very useful as well (always assuming the informant has the correct knowledge). The marriage certificate should give ages/place of birth of both parties so may help to determine if you have found the correct births

Trish

Probably the death of Henry from the NSW index

Hi Trish and Suey,

Thank you for your quick replies.

I have the death certificate for Henry and the informant was Henry's son-in-law.  Henry's death certificate states wife was Florence.

I have searched NSWbdm's for the death of Harriet Walsh also Harriet Hardley and can't find anything.  Roll Eyes.

I will apply for the death certificate for Florence as suggested and hopefully that will help.

My mother told me that bigamy was committed by a family member and he did two years gaol.  My mother never said who it was.  Do you know anything about searching bigamy?

As i am still an apprentice at this any help is much appreciated.

Regards

Hi Kaye

I don't have many other ideas for this issue. if Henry did marry Florence, she would have been very young - One can wonder if something illegal was happening to allow the marriage - but that is simply guessing. May also be worth checking BDMs in other states. Perhaps he met Florence after marrying Harriet  Huh

there may be some information at the NSW archives in relation to the bigamy
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/staterecords/

If you posted a query on the immigrant to Australia board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,165.0.html

some of the australians on RootsChat will probably have some more ideas to help

good luck

Hi
Have you a copy of the marriage certificate of Henry Hardley Reg No 1577/1888 on NSW Indexes? I'm wondering could the Index have been transcribed incorrectly and the actual marriage was to Florence.

Thank you for your interest.  I will also apply for the marriage certificate.

Hi everyone,

I have applied for the marriage certificate of Henry and Harriet.

I also had an idea.  Given that Harriet was about 36 at the time of her marriage maybe Florence was her daughter.  Undecided.

Possible?

This was a thought I had above, but didn't spell it out - it seems unlikely, given her death certificate - unless William remarried & the two were 1/2 sisters - or  Florence was registered to her grandparents? May be worthwhile to try and follow-up the one/two Williams and his/their wives

Hi Trish Suey and Andy,

No longer a mystery.   Grin

I received the death certificate for Florence Hardley and the marriage certificate for Henry Hardley.

Henry definately married Florence! (probably a transcribers error)

The marriage certificate states she was 21 but her death certificate states she was 16 at the time of the marriage.

Thanks to all of you for you suggestions and help.

The 21 at marriage was no doubt to avoid problems of consent - from some of my family records the preacher must simply ignore the fact that the girls looked about 15 years old! It was a man's world -  Angry Angry

Have you discussed the error with the NSW BDM folks - it turned out to be a expensive error for you  Sad  but no doubt the certificates are useful for your family files. Maybe you could send them a bill for "Error Correction"  Cheesy

I am pleased it all worked out for you - it is always nice to solve a family mystery.
