Stuck! Bewcail/Bucille/Bucaille b.c1817-19
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 15:54 GMT (UK) »

I'm completely stuck, this is what I have so far -

Robert Foster married 1. Elizabeth Johnson 17/07/1823
Elizabeth buried Springthorpe 19/07/1835 age 37

Robert Foster married 2. Sarah "Bewcail" 05/02/1837

They are on 1841 census and 1851 census together. Sarah's birthplace in 1851 is West Indies (BS)

In 1861, Sarah is a widow, birthplace NK
Sarah Foster marries Harrison Grainger 13/06/1863 at the Register Office in the district of Lincoln and Willingham. Witnesses are J E Copley Jr and Thomas Hop?thson/w?? Her father is John Bucille deceased, Soldier

In 1871 Sarah's birthplace is West Indies, in 1881 its Salop "Owestry" and 1891 its France!!

So my question is, who is this Sarah Bewcail/Bucille and her father? If she was born abroad where would I find records? I've searched briefly for the name but can't find anything for these spellings, only "Bucaille", which seems to be of French origin. Was her father French? She would only be a "BS" if he'd been serving in the English army wouldn't she?

I would love to be able to find out more about Sarah and her father John, where he served, where he came from , etc

Thanks for looking

CatOne, the name you query reminded me of Buachaille Etive Mor.  However it's a mountain in Scotland !   Not what you want but may suggest a lead for you.      Gragareth.

Hi,

I just took a look at the National Archives site (catalogue search) and found this chap:

JOHN M BUCAILLE
Born MORLAIX, France
Served in 60th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 32
Covering dates 1803-1818

I tried a few other name variations but nothing showed up.  However there could be more.

Regards,
Mo

Thank you both for your replies!  Smiley

I had a feeling this was going to be a difficult pair to trace, its the sort of name that can be easily mistranscribed/mispelt into anything!  Roll Eyes

That looks a good lead on the National Archives site, will have to see what there is to download there!

Thanks again
