Hello - minor update - I've dug out my notes from Luton library and have a couple of extra details to add to the above:
George Marshall ch. 19 Dec 1773 did die young - he was buried 23 Nov 1778 at Luton, described as 'of Chiltern Green'.
Phoebe Marshall ch. 9 Feb 1783 died as a young adult - she was buried 2 Jun 1802 of 'fever / decline' aged 19 at Luton - the second Phoebe christened in 1815 was therefore probably named after an aunt she never knew.

Also, Elizabeth Madle's maiden name was probably Arnold - there is an Elizabeth Arnold who married a John Mardell on 19 Nov 1770 at Luton, but then John Mardell was buried on 30 Dec 1770 - they were married for less than six weeks.  Elizabeth's burial record from 1803 gives her age as 50.

Thanks
Richard.

As this thread has turned into an epic containing lots of useful information about the MARSHALL Family, and not a simple lookup request that can be closed.  I am going to transfer it to the General board for posterity. Rick Smiley

Oops - I never intended to turn it into an epic!  Anyway, I went to Hitchin Library this morning and had a look to see if there was any more detail in those John & Ruth / William & Elizabeth Marshall baptisms at Kimpton.  Here goes:

1798: Dec 23 Charlotte D. of John & Elizabeth Marshal
1801: April 19th William Son of John Marshall & Ruth his Wife
1803: Nov 13 George son of John Marshall & Ruth his Wife
1804: May 27 James Son of William Marshall & Elizth his Wife
1805: Dec 22 William Son of William Marshall & Elizth his Wife
1806: Feb 9 John the Son of John Marshal & Ruth his Wife
1808: Janry 31 Mary Dr of William Marshall & Elizth his Wife
1808: Oct 16 Vincent Son of John Marshall & Ruth his Wife
1810: Feb 25 Maria Dr of William Marshall & Elizth his Wife
1810: Dec 2 James son of John Marshal & Ruth his Wife
-new style book introduced 1813-
No.80 / 26 Nov 1815 / Phoebe daughter of / William Elizabeth / Marshall / Peters Green / Labourer
No.174 / 31 May 1818 / George son of / William Elizabeth / Marshall / Peters Green / Labourer
No.293 / 3 Jun 1821 / Eliza daughter of / William Elizabeth / Marshall / Petersgreen / Labourer
No.322 / 6 Jan 1822 / John Son of / John Frances / Marshall / Petersgreen / Labourer
No.425 / 11 Apr 1824 / Sarah Daughter of / William Elizabeth / Marshall / Kingswalden / Labourer

It appears that there is not really any more detail on the John & Ruth children than was on the IGI - prior to 1813 residences are not specified.  However, the post 1813 William & Elizabeth children were all from Peters Green, apart from the last who was from King's Walden.  Curiously, I couldn't find any Marshalls in the Kimpton burials from the late 1790s to the early 1860s.
Thanks
Richard.

Richard,

Thanks for your help on this, I was aware of some of the children of John and Ruth-but you have added even more.

I don't know where John was born, but will have to keep on looking.

Cheers

Thanks Richard
I had this off IGI, but it is always good to get it confirmed.  Slightly curious about the witness - don't have records of Gilpah (or anything similar) or any other unusual names for that matter, although it may be an obscure relative that I haven't got to yet Grin Huh

Thanks again
