Hello, English Daisy I think I can fill in some of the blanks that you had on Ellen Smith. She is residing with Edmund and Fanny Calvert in Jarrow in 1871. Edmund and Fanny are my great great grandparents. A mystery surrounds this couple and I have only just broken through the brick wall. Bear with my while I outline what I know. This is my maternal line. I always understood that my gggrandfather was called Robert Davies. I have never been able (until last week) to find his birth record or any of his children. Thanks to another roootchatter I was given the plot of his grave. My cousin then went and took a photograph. Only last weekend did I look closely at the inscription. He is named as Robert Edmund Calvert Davies. I thought this unusual and traced back to his place of birth as shown on the 81 and 91 census, when he is Robert Davies in Birkenhead. He was born Edmund Calvert and all of his children were registered with the last name of Calvert. Edmund left Jarrow and his eldest son was born in Ulverston in 1875. He then appears in the 1881 census with the name Robert Davies in Birkenhead. I am sure this is how Ellen came to be in Birkenhead. What I have not cracked is whose child she is - whether a sister of Edmund alias Robert or Fanny. Between 1861 (after the census that year) he appears to have gone to Mauritius and this is where the eldest child Mary Esther was born as she is shown on a baptism record in Jarrow in 1863 aged 3 months recording that she was born in Mauritius. Other census data also supports this. I can only assume that he left Barrow under some dark cloud. All of his children go on to assume the name Davies down the line to my mother. I also know that I have the correct information as a Thomas Hill aged 19 is also in the grave with Fanny and Robert and if you look at the 1871 census you will see his mother and father residing with Fanny and Robert at the Red Lion in Jarrow. I will keep looking and see if I can find who the parents of Ellen are. If I do I will let you know. This may be a very long shot, but I remember my mother telling me that a relative emigrated to Australia. This is only word of mouth and I have no evidence to support this, but it may have been Ellen. I hope this helps and if I come up with anymore I will let you know. Regards Kathb
