Where is Sandy Gate???
« on: Saturday 03 November 07 09:20 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

Am hoping someone can tell me where Sandy Gate is/was, in Leicestershire. It's from an 1861 census and is my only reference, bar Leicestershire, of where my gggg grandmother was born.

Thank you

Adrianne

There are two Sandy Gates in Lincolnshire, close to the Leicestershire borders. There are three in Yorkshire, which is too far away.

Look forward to seeing the references and establishing where it is!

That's Sandgate in Kent, Sylvia, not Sandigate in Leicester!

I think Bev might be on the right track.

Hi Adrianne,
Sanvey gate is from Old English sand-weg "the sandy way" + Old Norse Gata "road"
In 1316 this road was known as le Sckeyth a name that derives from the Old Norse Sketh "a track,a race,a race course".
info from; Understanding Leicestershire & Rutland Place Names by Jill Bourne.

It is very possible that in 1861 that Sanvey Gate was still pronounced in Leicester dialect as Sandygate.
Hope this helps,
Mark.

Thanks everyone  Cheesy

I agree, Sanvey Gate looks promising. I would never have found that on my own. Thanks again Grin
