Free web space
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 13:22 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

Just had confirmation that my web space is active, and this presents me with quite a few questions which I have been unable to see going through the forum.
I already have my own web site up and running, using my program Ewisoft website builder, what I need to be able to do is to import existing site into new free space. My existing site has been up and running for a year so do not wish to alter it,just to move it to the newly aquired free space.
Any help or advice on this appreciated.
Regards,

Hi Langtry,

I don't know your ewisoft website builder program, but if it builds a site on your computer first, then you just need to upload this to your new webspace.

If it doesn't, i.e. if it always uploads directly to the webspace, then you can either set the parameters in Ewisoft to your new RootsChat webspace, or you can download the existing site onto your computer, and then upload it to RootsChat webspace.

Hi Langtry,

Good luck !

one point to watch out for.

The "holding page" (what you see now, when you look at your RootsChat webspace) is called index.html.

If Ewisoft also produces a home page called index.html, then there is no problem, as the old page will be overwritten, but if the home page is called index.htm (without the L) then you must delete the index.html file yourself, so that your new index page is recognised.

Hi Bob,

Looking at my ftp program with my existing site host(paid) it shows public-html as well as index-html but the former seems to be the main one, looks a bit tricky,so have written to explains situation to Ewisoft, will see what they suggest, will let you know the outcome.I am rather hoping I will not have to go through the old rigmarol with Googl to get recognised.

Hi Langtry,

As a first step, make sure all file names are in lower-case, without blanks in the names (Windows and Linux have different ideas of what is right and wrong here)

i.e. not My Picture.jpg but my_picture.jpg
