Missing (or cannot be found ) in 1851 census (Completed with thanks)
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 17:52 UTC (UK) »

Hi
We have a puzzle that I hope someone can help us with. We have a well documented time line for Josiah Caldwell (of Derbyshire England) as detailed here but we cannot find him (or his family) despite having searched every which way it seems - on the 1851 census.

1812 birth: Aldwark (census; christened Bradbourne, IGI)
1835 marriage: in Brassington (IGI) To Hannah Torr b. 1810 Brassington Derbyshire.
1836 birth of William: Brassington
1841 census: Brassington (with wife and children)
1845 birth of Joseph: Cromford (census)
1847 birth of George: Brassington (census)
1851 census: not found
1851 Dec birth of Josiah: 6 Upper Bland Street, Newington [Southwark]
1861 census: East End, Manchester-Ashton under Lyne New Road, Droyslden (with wife and children, and granddaughter)
1871 census: Clayton Street, Droylsden (with wife and children, and granddaughters)
1881 census: 1 William Street, Droylsden (with wife and son Josiah and his family)

Has anyone any ideas as to where they might have been in 1851? We would be grateful for any help.

Hi IndisVanyar,

I had this problem myself about a year ago - see here:

I have tried all of the little tricks down to alternate spellings and women named Hannah, b. Derbyshire with spouses named Josiah. Noting turns up so you will have to assume that the record was not transcribed at all, or lost or never taken. There are many such blanks around. Usually with some experience they can be tracked but here there seem to be no tracks, not even by the children.

Hi JillJ

Many thanks for the link.
That is really interesting - and incredibly frustrating!!! but it would explain why we cannot find them.

(Quote from previous thread - The 1851 Manchester & Salford census was badly damaged by water and illegible, but the M & L FHS used ultra violet light to recover 70 - 80% of the records, these are the Unfilmed, the remaining records were either missing or too badly damaged.)

I can now only hope that someone can do for us what they managed to do for you, but if not, at least I won't feel as if I have lost my marbles!  Roll Eyes

Thanks Hackstaple for taking the time to search the census.

I was hoping for some lateral thinking from a fresh perspective but if they were damaged as seems likely,  we are , as they say, on a hiding to nowhere!

(Just in passing - I too have Lawrence in my tree - Middlesex and Bedfordshire)

Two years on and Josiah has been found!

No wonder we couldn't locate him - according to Ancestry he is transcribed as Wsicah Calvet, born Monlitt, Ireland, and his wife’s birthplace is transcribed as Admington, Ireland.

Findmypast.com has him correctly listed as:
Ref - HO107/1566/76/12
1851 census for Newington Surrey
Address - 127 Dover Road, Newington
Josiah Caldwell, Head, M, 38, Carman, Derbyshire Aldwark
Hannah do, Wife, M, 40, do Brassington
William do, Son, U, 14, do
Ann do, Dau, U, 12, do
Mary do, Dau, U, 9, do
Joseph do, Son, 6, Scholar, do
George do, Nephew, 4, do, do

So another brick wall demolished.
