Help with Lines
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 18:04 GMT (UK) »

Hi all

I have a Mary Ballard married to James Line in 1797.

My problem is exactly who was Mary Ballard the daughter of?

According to the IGI she was the daughter of both

a) Bernard Ballard & Lucy Illesbury and married James Line on the 13th January 1797

b)George Ballard & Mary Barefoot and married James Line on the 30th January 1797.

I guess its possible there were two Marys' and two James', but to be married so close in dates....

Appreciate any help or suggestions

The problem is that all the IGI entries for this marriage are submitted by members of the LDS church - they're not transcriptions from the parish registers or even the Bishops Transcripts.

So, basically, they each represent one person's version of the 'truth'!

I can't help you with who Mary Ballard's parents were, but, Family History Online gives the marriage as 30 Jan 1797 in Ufton Nervet.

As you probably know, Family History Online is the Federation of FHSs website , so I'd go with that!

Thanks Jill

for the info, I'll go with the 30th.  Actually I didn't know that about  Family History online, so thats something else I've learned!

But tell me..
If on the IGI members of the LDS submit the dates etc,
where then do they get the information , if not from Parish records?

I suppose that's the $64,000 question! Wish I knew the answer!

A lot of them do turn out to be right - and others are so wide of the mark it's laughable. The difficulty is trying to work out which is which!!!   Roll Eyes
