index.htm
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 18:47 GMT (UK) »

I created my website in Legacy which runs well on my own website I have downloaded the entire site and have ftp uploaded it to my free webspace on roots and when I click on the webaddress it is still the same page as already assigned i.e you have free web pages. Now my initial page is index.htm the same as the initial page assigned so why doesntit overwrite it.

Also as a separate issue in the file manager index.htm has vanished? although if I type in the web address Jamesfamily.rootschat.net it is still there?

Hi Mongoose2

I think it could be because the RC holding page is index.html not just htm

Quote
This holding page for your website that you see is "index.html", which you will need to delete or overwrite when you upload your website in order for your new website to be viewable. It is only here to show you that your webspace has been set up.

Go here for the Rootschat website manager where you should be able to change it.

http://www.rootschat.net/cgi-bin/amanager.cgi

Sorry I can't be more help but i'm sure someone else will be able to explain more clearly.

The advice given by dinie is spot on ..... you will need to remove the index.html file to allow the server to "recognise" your own index page.

As regards the 2nd point ... can you clarify this, please.

to explain a bit clearer I hope, when I transfer all the files up to website and then view those same files in filemanager I cannot see all the files.

secondly my initial page is index.htm so how does deleting index.html make the website redirect to index.htm? does it do this automatically or do I have to do something?

Hi Mongoose,

Quote
so how does deleting index.html make the website redirect to index.htm?
if you have two files on your website index.htm and index.html, the server software will send the index.html to your browser.

If it doesn't find index.html, it will look for a index.htm and send that.

When Trystan set up your webspace, he added a page index.html with the welcoming text.
If you don't delete this, then your index.htm will never be used.

This is why you need to delete the index.html

The server will looks for the default webpage following a set pattern.

The main part can be index or (I think there are several other options available)

the minor part of the filename can be html, htm, php, shtml ....

The list goes on and on.

If it finds an Index.html before it finds an index htm file then the index.html file is what gets displayed.

If you ask for your site .rootschat.net

you get what the server finds.

But if you ask for yoursite.rootschat.net/index.htm

you should get your front page.

If however you are having issues with the Site Censor software, It deletes files containg anything it doesn't like, then you should check your content.

time is a great healer and yes julian I can now see it myself.

2nd question when I look in file manager I cannot see all the files and folders? is there a way to see them all in one go or is there some sort of display limit?

Don't know the macromedia answer (is Bob watching?  He might)

2nd question when I look in file manager I cannot see all the files and folders? is there a way to see them all in one go or is there some sort of display limit?

Are you looking at the files through your ftp programme or in rootschat file manager?

In rootschat file manager, I think I can see all my files in their own folder.  Well, let's just say I can see all the files I think I ought to see!

JULIAN

NB I only use the RC file manager for uploading small numbers of files.  If I'm doing a big replacement job, I tend to use a FTP programme.  But I can use the RC file manager succesfuly when connected wirelessly, but my FTP programmes don't work with RC wirelessly - I have to plug my pc in to the router.  It's all something to do with the way wireless security operates.

Your problem may be spaces in the filenames. Can you rename your files ?

By removing any spaces
