help with possible wrong transcription of marriage in Havant area ?
« on: Monday 05 November 07 23:52 GMT (UK) »

Hi
I am looking for a marriage between James KIDGER and Louisa HILL (my ggrandparents) . we know that James was a bit of a lad and wasn't averse to the odd name change(he swapped surnames with Louisa about 1867and back again  by 1881).I have trawled through the g.r.o from 1857 to 1867 with all possible spellings and the names reversed etc but with no luck and searches on  ancestry and freebmd have revealed nothing , how ever  on free bmd and ancestry a Louisa hill  married a James CLIABER/CLEABER June 1859 registration district Havant.I have run the name cliaber through search engines and all that comes up is a misspelling of caliber in relation to guns! i can find no children or adults  named cliaber before or after 1859 . As the transcribers have managed to get two interpretations  i was wondering whether the same may have occurred from the parish records to the g.r.o or indeed James may have deliberately given a wrong name. of course i could be barking up the wrong tree . Who says genealogy is not exciting ! If anyone has access to parish records for that area and could look it up for me it would be much appreciated.

Hi Graham,

If you click on the pair of specs to the right of the freebmd entry info, you can look at the image, the dot above the i of Cliaber/Cleaber isn't clear. Ancestry uses the information from freebmd. Transcribers for freebmd have to write what they see, which is probably why there are the two differing transcriptions on freebmd and ancestry.

Have you checked the 1861 census for the two couples shown on that page just to be sure Louisa Hill did marry James and not Charles North? Just had a quick look and there is a Charles & Louisa North living in Havant....

Hi Barbara
thanks for getting back to me so quickly  . I am afraid it is clutching at straws time  hence the request i have made .James is reputed to have been a good singer and musician( didnt come down the genes unfortunatly) and  pops up in birmingham, leicester and liverpool  so as he appears a bit of a wanderer and had changed his name at least once i thought it might be worth a shot.

                                            thanks for your attention
                                                Regards  Graham

Sorry to dash things for you, but have just found Almena Rebecca Beazley in 1851, and then in 1861 she is married to James Clinker (sister Rhoda Beazley living with them) - so they got James' name wrong anyway!!  Unfortunately that means Louisa Hill married Charles North and Almena married James Cliaber/Cleaber/Clinker.

Back to the drawing board......... Undecided

Do you have them both in 1851?  Where were they both living then, and where do you think they might have married, if not Havant?
