Hi

If you go to the War Graves Commision there is one Ernest Berry dying in 1942 that could be him.

http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?surname=berry&initials=&war=0&yearfrom=1940&yearto=1942&force=&nationality=&send.x=48&send.y=8

If your grandad served in WW1 then it is likely he was alive in 1901 either as a child or a little older.
I have found in 1901

Key Street - Derby-St Pauls

Alfred Berry Head 46 Railway Clerk b. Wilts Plaviston ?
Victoria Berry Wife 47 b. Glos, Thornbury
Frank Berry Son 14 Railway Messenger b. Manchester
Ernest Berry Son 8 b. Derby

The only other Ernest Berry I can see born Derbyshire on the 1901 is living in New Mills Derbyshire, near Manchester

Does this ring any bells ?

I do not think the Ernest Berry died WW2 is yours as the cwgc says he was the son of a family from Glamorgan Wales

Do you know where Ernest was living when he died as I may be able to find the death for you

You could also look for his medal card on the National Archives Website - Medal rolls index - this lists men who served WW1 and were awarded a medal for a campaign they fought in

Ancestry lists a number of Ernest Berry's who served WW1
Did he have a middle name that you know of?
Any idea on a rough year of birth ?
Or a rough age when he died ?
Or an occupation ?

Hi Dean ?
I think this may be your ancestor:-

16651 Ernest Arthur Berry born Stratford Upon Avon, Warwicks about 1893
Enlisted 14th Sep 1914 aged 21 and 3 days (maybe 310 days) at Ilkeston , Derbyshire - (not too far from Heanor, Smalley).  Sherwood Forrester, only served for 53 days at home in UK, discharged to pension 5 Nov 1914, as unlikely to become an efficient soldier due to Hysterio ? Epilepsy. Next of Kin - Father- Alfred Berry of 25 Ebenezer Street, Langley Mill (not too far from Heanor or Smalley). Brother - William Alfred Berry of Breach/Breech Road, Langley Mill, - Sister - Alice Berry of Smeaton Road, Langley Mill. Considered unfit for military service within 3 months of enlistment. Church of England, Height 5'9" Chext 36" Weight 143lbs
Hair- Fair- Complexion - Fair.

Please let me know if this rings any bells -especially the next of kin details

I have now looked for a death between 1942 and 1944
One that seems to fit is Ernest A. Berry died Q 2 - April. May, June 1943 in Coventry aged 50 = born about 1893
Volume 6d  Page 680

A death certificate will give cause of death, place of death, who registered the death - which is sometimes a doctor/sometimes a next of kin.

Go onto the GRO website to order one - cost is £7.00

Think the p.o.b. is Alcester Warwicks
Alvaston is an area of Derby

If Ernest lived in Smalley area in 1827, then he possibly was a nightwatchman at British Celanese Spondon.

Hi
Well if Alfred & Victoria are his parents then it must be the family I found on the post above in Derby  St Pauls District Keys Street in 1901 which says Ernest was born in Derby.

I did look at deaths from 1942 to 1944 and the record I sent to you above is the only Ernest Berry dying in Coventry.  Other Ernest Berry's were mentioned from other districts but they all had different middle names.

I have looked on ancestry WW1 served pension records (which is not complete) and I can not find a Berry with a no.183009 - I also looked at those just named Ernest - (without a middle name) but did not find one to fit.

I have had a quick look at the medal rolls but the men I found with service no 183009 had completely different surnames - not Berry at all.

It would be a good idea to post your questions on the military board on the site - as the military experts may be able to advise you.
