I'd say that the untranscribed page number on FreeBMD was 913 - all other middle digits dont produce any names, and that one has one missing male !

There is a Mary Barnes in the area - no husband present on the census, and as well as older 'stepkids' named COLEMAN, there is a 3 year old Charles Barnes there, born Atherstone ...

Do you mean FreeCEN ?
Searching for Charles b1869 doesnt find them - I looked for female Barnes, called Lucy or Mary (based on the Marriage page from FreeBMD)- and found the above - so if you had the correct Charles Barnes in 1896, then thats who he married - Mary Coleman and kids !
Where he is on 1901 I dont know, he's refusing to be teased out.
Any Army (Boer War) involvement to your knowledge ?
