Albany Cottage, Shorne, Kent
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 14:32 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

My gr-gr-father Albert Thomas Wilson and his 3rd wife Lizzie lived in Shorne before WW2.
Albert died in 1928 and Lizzie in 1947.
I know Lizzie still lived in Shorne after albert died. I have no full address, but I know she lived at Albany Cottage.

My questions: Does anyone have a photograph of Albany Cottage? And does it still excist today?
Would Albany Cottage be the name of just one house or the name of a Street?
I haven't got a clue...

Where can I find a map of Shorne from the period 1900-1947 with the streetnames on it?

Any help grately appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi,

I looked at the image. Could be it, not sure. I have a photo of my grandmother, her sister and stepmother Lizzie in front of Albany Cottage. However, you can only see part of a window and a small part of a door. On the front of the house there's the name Albany Cottage. There also was a fence in front of the house, but quite near the frontdoor. So I can't say for sure that it's the same house. On the image it says Home-Mead Albany Cottage II: what does Home-Mead mean and does it mean that there was also an Albany Cottage I?
Maybe silly questions but forgive me I'm just a poor country girl from Holland.

Hi Miss Marple Smiley

Shorne is over the back from me.  Unfortunately, I don't drive, or I would have had a look for you.

Shorne in 1901, ran from Shornemead Fort, down by the Thames, up to near Cobhall Hall.
Round here we call it, Upper Shorne and Lower Shorne.

Try giving them an e mail, they may be able to tell you. Much of Shorne is still a pretty village with the old houses etc;  So, I could imagine Albany Cott could still be there.

Best Wishes.... Iris Smiley

Hi Everyone.
All this talk about Shorne is making me home sick.I live in Perth Australia now but was born near Shorne.I spent most of my childhood playing in the Shorne area.I loved the woods by Peartree lane. All gone now with the new bypass!
I think my Rolfe family came from there,Shorne parish records are very good on Cityark, very clear!

            Regards Jean.

I'm pretty certain that Homemead is the name of one of a pair of cottages in Shorne as I used to drive past it on my way to Gravesend to go shopping before the bypass was built and the road cut off.

This is scanned from a book I have. No mention of Albany Cottage but the left half of the building inbetween the low one and timber clad one I'm pretty sure is Homemead. Anything look familiar?

Carole

Sorry it's a bit wonky.

Hi,

no doesn't look familiar. I have attached the photo I was talking about. Taken about 1945. Maybe anyone will recognise the cottage?

I think that could well be one of those cottages - in the photo there is the low roof to the left then the building I am thinking of is between that and the boarded one - the one with the two big chimneys. They are a pair of cottages and I think yours might be the one on the right. The door and sash window look right to me.

I'll take a photo the next time I go past.

It is Albany Cottage and it is still called that

And if you'd like to buy it it's up for sale - although I can't find a website for the agents Walker&Croft in Gravesend

The weird thing is I recognised it as years ago, Homemead, the other half of the pair, was up for sale and I would love to have bought it but I couldn't convince my dad that it would be a good idea!

Hi U2,

Carole thank you so much for taking the time to make a photo of Albany Cottage. I take it that the name Albany Cottage is on the white uhh thing (don't know the english word, sorry) next to the frontdoor?
When I go to England again I want to visit a few places my gr-gr-grandparents etc. lived. This will surely be one of these places! Cheesy

Al & Al, thank you for finding this site. Now I even know how it looks inside! Great! Grin

They are asking a lot for the size of accomodation there is - nowhere to park a car either except on the street which is very narrow - which is why, I guess, the fence has gone, but there are very few period houses for sale around here which is why it's so expensive.
