Hello,
I'm researching the Bird family in Australia and so far I have found a
William John Bird born c1854 Dartmouth, Totnes Devonshire to William John Bird and Mary Blight.
William b.c1854 married Jan-Mar 1874 Mary Hutchins/Hutchings/Hatchings at Totnes, Devonshire Vol 5B page 333. We don't have any further info on Mary Hutchings but we think she may have been born c.1846 also Totnes, Devonshire.
I have quite a lot of their Australian history but I'm now interested in trying to trace their Devon roots.
William & Mary migrated to Australia in 1881 with 3 children, Charlotte, Alice & Jessie.
1. Is it possible to find more info about William b.c.1854. Did he have any siblings etc.
2. Is it possible to find any more info about Mary Hutchings.

Sep 1874 Bird Charlotte Janet Totnes 5b 175
Mar Qtr 1877 BIRD Alice Totnes 5b 191
Jun Qtr 1879 Bird Jessie Totnes 5b 181
William John Bird and Mary Hutchings should at least be on the 1861 and 1871 censuses with their respective parents.

Hi Sashar and Ruskie
There are no exact matches that I can see for William and Mary born Totnes, Dartmouth area but have found this for Mary Hutchins. Hope I am on the right track.
On page 4 Emigrants Australia board there is a death for Mary Bird 1908 with parents Samuel Hutchings and Charlotte Reid and this is the closest that I can see but someone else may find something different.

Looks promising Cazay, given the fact that Mary names her first child Charlotte.
Shame that the Birds are hiding. Wonder if they are mistranscribed as Byrd?

If that is the correct family on the census, I found this extracted record on the IGI:
Samuel Hutchings chr April 1823 Buckland Filleigh Devon father William, mother Dorothy
No date given, just the month April
Can't see an obvious Charlotte Reid.
There are some terrific BMD PRs on Genuki for Peters Marland. Lots of Hutchings on there, not so many Reids/Reeds. I couldn't find either of the above people but recommend you double check just in case I missed them.

Earlier I checked Joseph and Amelia Bird, looks like they came from Wales and the other Bird family (William died in Townsville) were all born in Huntingdonshire.

Toni, I think they arrived Australia 5 April 1881 on the Earl Granville and the 1881 census was taken on 3 April 1881, so just missing out.

I've never searched in Devon before so am not familiar with placenames. I'm not having much luck with these people on the IGI.
I vaguely remember reading that Devon and Cornwall don't have good coverage on the IGI - is this right, or did I make it up? 
That would explain no results ...
