Morfey Wood - Peasemarsh
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 10:10 GMT (UK) »

On the east side of the road at the entrance to Church Lane, Peasemarsh, there is woodland called Morfey Wood.

Can anyone help with regard to which Morfey it was named after, when and why.

Any help would be appreciated

A visit to my local reference library at Hastings today revealed an 1872  map showing the wood so named.

Can anyone help with further information.

Hi Dave,

I have a great deal of information on the Morfey's from Peasemarsh as from about the 1820's onwards I have Grandparents, G/Grandparents and G/G/Grandparents from that area.

There is too much to cover here, if you are able to contact me privately I'll gladly share the information. I am not sure how we achieve the privacy bit here.

What is your connection to the Morfey line?

Regards,

Ian Morfey

To Ian Morfey,

Hi,  I am currently trying to trace any ancestors of the Morfey family from the Peasmarsh/Rye area and in particular any info on Rosina (Rosa) Morfey who married Sidney Herbert Dodd (Staffs) late 1800's 1900's?  (I think)

Any info would be gratefully received

Many thanks

Hi Katie
Welcome to rootschat.    Once you have achieved 3 posts you will be able to use our private message system - click on the name of the person you want to contact and follow the link.  Reply to this and you will get there!   You can then send your email address to the other researchers and it will be hidden from the rest of us.  I should wait to see if either of them get back to you on this post first though.

Hi Katie
contrary to my post at the top of this list, my Morfey ancestors came from the Suffolk / Norfolk area. I don't know if you have come across any info on this branch in your search?
Glad to share any of my Morfey data with you
Kind Regards

at risk of stating the obvious I would go back as far as possible on the 'ordance survey' maps and the like and see when it became named as Morefy Wood and then i would look at records to see who / which Morfey was in the area at that time

there are obvious records like the PR's but also the electrol roll before it became er not open to the public to view - if the person owned the land and had £10 was male and over 21 then they would be recorded in same

Hi Toni,

Many thanks for your message.

At the ESRO I have so far been back to the 1830's via the maps there.

I have two very strong candidates for the ownership before that date but cannot yet determine which one owned the wood.

I have looked at the land tax records but not the electoral roll.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Regards,
