Ancestral Chart Numbering
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 09:21 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I am wondering if there is an easier way of numbering ancestral charts than the one I have.

I have a couple of branches of family going back 15 generations (which is great - I know), but my ancestral chart numbers are starting at 458 now.  I have adopted a system whereby my Ancestral Chart 1 leads onto Charts 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and tried to keep the numbering consistent.

Do I just throw the consistent bit out of the window and use chart numbers when I need them.

If anybody can point me in the right direction - I would be grateful.

Thanks Peony

Sorry but i couldn't resist this one. Grin    Throw them out the window.
I don't mean to be offensive but i have tried all differant ways and in the end i always end up with duplicates. You have asked a very good question and i hope you can get an answer that we can both use.

Before the Internet came along most 'how to' genealogy books explained things like ancestral chart, numbering, etc. There's probably something available online but wouldn't hurt to see what your local library might have on offer.
I also have some families going back about 15-20 generations and my older 5-generation charts had a line saying for the people in 5th generation saying this person is on chart #_, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.  I have googled the problem, so I think it is the library next.

At least with excel I can keep an index of which family is on which sheet.

I just wondered if their was an easy  solution that I had not thought of!

Welcome to the complex world of numbering things  Smiley

The LDS try to resolve this problem with the gedcom file back in 1995 but it seems individuals still like to make their own unique numbering system.

I've written a Rough Guide to gedcom numbering which you might want to glance at but it probably won't help you with problem. Smiley

The problem with reports and charts is that they do not always account for generation lag .  This is where you get slippage between generations.  The youngest child of you first ancester may be born 20 years after the first in a large family.  The first child may have married and have a family while his youngest brother is still a baby.  This creates a generation gap and so when you run a report or a chart it might say that you have 15 generations, which is true for the oldest sibling in the family but for the youngest he might have generated 12 or 13 generations of descendants.

HI,

I have never had to deal with the Gedcom numbering before and I think it may take more that the glance I have just given it to understand it fully.

But thank you very much for this I will take a good look this evening.
