North Marston - PAULA TOO
« on: Monday 12 November 07 07:02 GMT (UK) »

Hi PaulaToo

I have a Nathaniel Horwood born North Marston 1681 and a Joannah Franklin born North Marston 1685.

They married at North Marston on 12 Apr 1713.  Well at least these are the details that i have recorded on my tree.

Only trouble is I havent noted any sources for this info (silly I know) and I cant remember how I came by them!

Would it be possible for you to confirm if these dates are accurate and if possible give me the chr dates of Nathaniel and Joannah please?

Any chance that you might be connected to these people too?

I appreciate given the  dates that this info may be hard to come by.

Many many thanks

they are on the IGI
they are submitted entries and not ext. entries so should be treated with some caution
no record of christening only births and marriage and death for joannah 19th june 1718.

Hello Wozzle (great name)

Thank you for the info about the IGI. I noticed that they were on the iGI, but don't normally use data from the IGI unless its an extract from a parish record - of course the person that may have given me this data could have got it from the IGI!

The death date for Joannah may well be accurate as I have a birth of 1718 for the last child of Joannah and Nathaniel.

The biggest problem with the IGI (I find!) is that you cant access further details or (normally) contact the submitter of the said info.  i did hear something about the IGI being updated, but that was about a year ago and I haven't noticed anything since then!

I appreciate your input Wozzle and will bear in mind the death date.  Thank you again

Hi Tezz,
The marriage is there, and quite correct.

But the baptisms I can't help with, I'm afraid.
A great chunk has been torn out of the North Marston register, before it got to be copied, there isn't even a BTS for it...and yep, got to be around this time.
There is no BTS for 1678 to 1679 and only fragments of lines left in the Parish Register. Then we have bits of 1680 and 1681 and no BTS 1682 to 1699
PRS recommence in 1697
One wonders what was going on there that had to be covered up?

There is a Mary NORWOOD daughter of John, baptised May 26 1861, and Francis son of John and Sarah, Nov 14th 1697.  I don't know if they are related...Norwood/Horwood.

My John Franklin disappears down the same black hole.
I do have a marriage
21 Jul 1701
Jonathan Franklin, carpenter of Gt Horwood, soj. i.t.p.
Elizabeth Edwards, servant B.B.

Their son John (my John, I hope) is baptised in Feb 1701

Looks like it was a shotgun wedding Wink

get back to me for anything else, will give it a try...

Paula has beaten me to it - I have a CD of North Marston PRs and they go missing between 1682 and 1697.

I did find these burials:

16 Jan 1748 Nathanael Horwood, poor man

19 June 1718 Joannah Norwood, wife of Nathaniel

I have Horwood/Horrads in my tree and am a bit stuck with them. I'm trying to find the marriage of John Horwood and a Martha in about 1740 - they had their children in Wargrave and Hurley, Berks - not too far from Bucks. I don't suppose there's any connection, Tezz?

I've been looking for that marriage for years - never thought of looking under Norwood!!

Sometimes the cleric had cloth ears, or spelt things differently, Jill.
If you have the North Marston CD and want a giggle... find your way back to the beginning and look for Mathew Denchfield....

baptised- Matthie Deanchfield 1600/01
married- Matheye Deanchfield 1632
buried- not found yet, so presumably under the patio, but could have been lost anywhere in the unCivil War.
at son John's baptism 1639- down as Mathew Denchfield...whew at last they got it right. Cheesy

I see what you mean, Paula! Cloth ears - or possibly no ears!!

One of my ancestors - a man! - is recorded as marrying a Matthew! Now, as this was way back in the 1600s, I'm thinking this wasn't a civil partnership ( Grin) so the poor bride must have given her name as Mattie (short for Matilda) and the poor clerk (who obviously was visually impaired as well as an owner of aforesaid cloth ears) wrote what he thought he heard. Unless of course, Mattie was built on the lines of a Russian shot putter...

Jill I love one of the first entries in the Grandborough marriages...

Saturday before Candlemas 1540
John Caponhurst & Richard Atkins....

Now seeing as the Caponhursts are my lot, I was thinking 'ey up at this point.... the mind does tend to boggle.

Later someone said Richard Atkins had a wife called Jone,  sigh of relief there... although I still wonder if they only entered the grooms names as my Richard Caponhurst had brothers, Chrystopher, John and Thomas, along with a sister Jone Caponhurst
