My school blazer went everywhere!
|
I am trying to find out the movements of my Mother and her parents in the Hull area for the period 1912 – 1941. I have listed below the information I hold. My Mother told me very little of her family history before her death. I am unaware of any occupation she may have had but I suspect she may have been involved in the bakery business, especially cake decoration e.g. wedding cakes.
My mother was born Dorrie Garton (but called herself Doreen) 01/09/1912 at 13 South Street, Hull, her father was a Pawnbrokers Assistant. His full name was George Hookham Garton (His mother’s maiden name was Hookham) and he married a Lilly Measham in 1901 at Whitwood Pontefract.
I would like to know for how long the Gartons were at 13 South Street (before 1912 and after) and what business was there. I suspect they lived in a flat above the shop but may not have run the shop itself? I have George H and Lilly in the 1901 census at their respective parent’s houses as they married after the census date. There was a son born “several years” earlier, lets say 1902-1905 ? who may be a George or have George as one of his names?
I know that Lilly Garton died 31/03/1935 and her address from her death certificate was 10 Argyle Street, Hull and I suspect my Mother was living there also as she registered the death and was “present at death”. George H Garton had died sometime before the 1920’s and on the death certificate for Lilly he is listed as a Jewellers Shop Assistant. Lilly may have run a lodging house at 13 South Street between the death of her husband and her own death?
I have an address of 92 Cardigan Road, Hull which appears to be a friend she may have lived with called Bilton. I would expect this to be after Argyle Street. Any information on that address re the occupiers and occupation would be helpful. She may also have had a flat shared with a Catherine (Kay) Welburn but as Street Directories only show heads she may not be found anywhere?
She met my Father who was in the RAF at a local camp and they married in Sept 1941 and she moved in time i.e. after the war, to live in N. Ireland. There is no occupation shown on her Marriage certificate.
Any information on addresses for the Gartons plus occupations would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Peter

:)Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the quick and in depth response, it lets me know that the move to Argyle road was much sooner than I thought.
I have a few queries if you could help 1. Are there any Gartons at South St before 1912? 2. Any sign of Miss Dorrie - Doreen Garton in the A-z bit of the street Directories after 1936 and before 1941? I know it only lists heads but just a long shot. 3. Was the Pawnbrokers in South St right up to 1935? 4. I take it other people moved in to Argyle St after 1936 AND 5. Any note of an occupation for Tho Bilton at Cardigan Rd?
In passing Lilly also used Lily as you showed in your reply and don't I know that there are LOTS of Gartons especially Georges in Hull
Finally I note you have Fullertons in Belfast so if you need any assistance in that direction just let me know as I live in Belfast. There is very limited internet access to records here so you have to do it the old way ie GRO, Church Records, Public Records etc. Thanks again Peter

Hi Peter Kelly's 1905 for Hull Owen & Robinson Ltd, pawnbrokers, (Wilfred Hyde, manager), 13 South Street.
also George Garton, pawnbroker's assistant, 8 Wyndham Street.
Wyndham Street was off Argyle Street.
Though Owen & Robinson are listed as pawnbrokers, I can remember them as a jewellers shop, probably into the 1960's.

Welcome to Rootschat Peter
I just had to butt in, and ask where Argyle Street is? The name rings a bell, I lived in Hull for three years, a long time ago, and lived on a few different streets off Springbank (renting flats). I worked at AIM on Derringham Street. Was it anywhere near these streets?
It could be that I've just typed the name hundreds of times, as I used to do solicitors time-sheets, and entered thousands of patient's addresses onto the computer, from cards. Maybe the name stuck in my head

Hi Rosemary,
Argyle Street runs from Anlaby Road northwards along side the hospital and joins onto Derringham Street

Hi Bee
Thanks for the input, it is starting to paint a picture for me. Never knew of the Wyndham St address but it appears to be in the right area ie Argyle St.
The name Wilfred Hyde rang a bell so checked my bits and pieces and found that he was one of the witnesses at the marriage of George Garton to Lily Measham in 1901. Another piece in the jigsaw Thanks for that one.
George was described as a Jewellers shop assistant on the death cert for Lilly in 1935 so that again ties in with your memories of Owen & Robinson.
I have been trying to trace the death of George. Per my Mum she was around 10yrs when he died so that would put him at 1922. I searched GRO records from 1920 to 1941! when he was recorded as deceased in my mums wedding certificate but did not find him?. I have now started working from 1920 back to 1912.
many thanks again
Peter

Hi Debbie, I have had a look at the Free BMD and the Yorkshire BMD websites......there are lots of George Gartons but the wrong ages etc. His dob is 7/06/1878 so in 1900 he was approx 22...I find it easier to start at the turn of a century and add so in 1927 he would be 49. I am also looking for George H as 1st names.
I have access to the GRO BMD site (England and Wales) and have trawled from 1920 -1941 ....looking not only in Yorkshire........he might have died on a day trip to London! He was not in the Army so I don't need to search there. I have one that nearly fits in Hull but I want to be sure as I have already wasted a few £7's at the GRO with certificates I am going to check back to 1912 to be 100%....first.
Dig out what you have on your Fullertons, ages, addresses - occupations etc and post a short note that you have them, I can sent you a private message with my home e-mail.
Regards
Peter

Hi Bee,
Thanks for looking up the 1913, it all adds up to paint a picture for me.
I have had a hic-up or whaterver you want to call it, I will need to post this new "little" problem as a seperate topic I think. It involves Gartons at 13 South Street - but different ones...I think there is a link to my ones but I want to be sure of what facts I have before posting....so wait a few days for the "exclusive".
Thanks again Peter
