my post of yesterday has been lost in the corruption "blip "that occurred on Sunday so I'll have another go.....
I wonder if any of the amazing rootschatters out there can point me in a direction to go (online or in person) to solve a long standing mystery in my family. My gggrandfather Henry Gostelow (Gostlow) and his mother Catherine appear in the 1851 census. Henry marries Mary Billingham in 1854 but after her death in 1859 I can find no concrete evidence of his existence. He is mentioned on his son's first marriage cert in 1876 and is described as deceased on the second in 1883 but I can find no burial or GRO record. Henry's sons appear on the 1861 census living with their aunt. Likewise his mother Catherine - I can find no burial or GRO record for her after 1851. There is no problem with records for the other members of this family but I know that many BMD were not registerd with the civil authorities at this time. Cheers
I did send a reply yesterday...but as we know now..
I like you can place the family in 1851 with head Daniel who I think dies 1866 giving year of birth @ 1791. He is a widow in the 1861 census but like you cannot see a death for Catherine. However it is strange that there is a death in Ashby De La Zouch for Catherine Gostelow b @ 1791 for the year 1876.It is possible that the entry could have been missed on the Hanslope site. I am hoping to get to the office on Wednesday ...house work permitting I could have a look then.
thanks for your reply. I think Catherine in Ashby De La Zouche comes from another branch of the family in Leics where names and dates tend to run in "tandem" with other branches of the Oxfordshire/Northants Gostelows. Henry may have left with the railway of course but there should be a record of him somewhere. The only other very tentative clue I have involves seasonal labourers from Ireland - perhaps he joined them.
anyway it's no fun if the hunt is too easy........
Managed to get to the office today to look for you ..eldest son has been off school for a week so had to wait till today. The parish records for Castlethorpe are still with the church and have not been deposited with other Bucks records to been indexed or copied I am afraid. I did look through Hanslope as well however and I searched all burials from 1851 -1871 looking for any Goslow/Gostlow/e spellings at all but nothing shows for Catherine's death or burial there.
Interestingly 2 burials are for Gostlow children from London..
Henry George Gostlow of St Pancras London age 1 1/2 in 1871 Frederick John Gostlow age 8 Killed by a train at Willesden Station. So maybe the hunch about moving with the railway may lead somewhere.
