Burial record look up - a huge favour please
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 14:54 GMT (UK) »

Further to my post yesterday, is there a very kind soul who could search the Nottingham Church records for the burial of William Barker (died 25/2/1918) please?

I have arranged to take my aged parents to see the War memorial in December but I know my Mum would dearly love to pay her respects to her grandfather at his actual grave.

I wonder whether he would have been recorded at St Mary's, in town or St Peter's in Old Radford, where the family lived.

Could anyone help please?

Thank you

MrsH

I tend to agree with suz on the other thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,267682.msg1522276.html#msg1522276

It seems very likely that the grave itself is at the General Cemetery in Nottingham. A quick google tells me that enquiries should be addressed to Northern Cemetery Bulwell

christine.stevenson(at)nottinghamcity.gov.uk  - replace (at) with @

I think that should be your first port of call to check whether the grave is there before some kind rootschatter spends a great deal of time going through parish records.

All the best, Heather

Thank you for your message Heather.  I have been in contact with Christine Stevenson about this for a while now.

The CWGC info gives his grave reference number (16441 Nottingham Cemetery) but Christine confirms this is the site of the War Memorial itself.  I would not have thought that the bodies of all those that died are under the War Memorial, hence my thoughts about the location of his actual body.

I do not know where the dead from the Trent Bridge military hospital were taken, what service (and I would have thought that there would have been one) was held for them and where they were buried.  In William's case, I wondered about St Mary's, as this seems to be the nearest church or perhaps Old Radford where the family lived previously but I really do not know.

Hi Mrs H

I cannot tell from your profile  where you are based.

Have you contacted Notts Archives? I presume you have but just in case http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/leisure/archives/libraries-archives-contact.htm

Trent Bridge Military Hospital was used until 1919 and I would have thought St Giles West Bridgford would be a possibility. But there are lots of churches around that area. I have emailed someone at the council and will get back to you.

Hi

I have had a response from the council and they say to contact Nottinghamshire Archives. He would not have been buried at Wilford Hill as they didn't start until 24.2.1919.

Many, many thanks to all who helped with this including Nottingham City Council and CWGC.  I am happy to report that we have found him,
