"Driver Wathen"
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 17:11 UTC (UK) »

I am looking at part of the Wathen family from the Kings Stanley area and would be grateful for any information on Driver Wathen and his parents.
I know his father was a Philip Wathen, and that he was a baker and malster of Kings Stanley, married Mildred Hayward in Frocester and that he wrote his will around 1793. Any other information would be very welcome.

Thanks so much.
I see now that the marriage is on the IGI, at St Dionis from the parish register and at "St Olave Southwark" from a couple of LDS sources!!!!!!!
I had searched for Wathen/Driver marriages around Gloucester and Herefordshire area, but didn't think of London. Why did they marry in London??? Did they elope? I see the licence was issued only a day or two before the wedding. And of course now "where and when was Driver born?Huh?

Lydia must have died and Philip married again as he names his wife as Elizabeth in his will.

Thanks again

Thinking again, Driver Wathen married in 1766, so it seems more likely that Philip Wathen and Liddia Driver were his grandparents.

I wonder what details the marriage licence gives or whether you can get any more clues from the actual parish register entry of the marriage? It says Liddia's parish is Southwark, so maybe someone can do a search for her birth. Wonder how she met a baker from Gloucestershire, or was it his son Philip that was the baker? maybe they both were....

I see theres an entry on the IGI for the christening of a Philip Wathen 18th March 1676, Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire, father - Thomas

and on 8th January, 1708, Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire, theres a christening of a Philip Wathin with father Philip which would fit better with being the father of your Driver Wathen?

Hi
There are quite a few "Drivers" in the area round Kings Stanley so perhaps Philip knew her before she went to London. I wonder if she was "in service"  and had moved to London with the family she worked for, I don't know if this happened as early as 1700.
The Driver Wathen I am after was a baker as was his father Philip, I don't know about his grandfather. I have sent to Gloucestershire Archives for Philip and Driver's wills, in the hope that they might throw some light on the matter.

Unfortunately the baptism entries don't give the mother's names.

I will try to find if the details of the marriage license are available.

Thanks for your help and interest.
Regards

Eric,

On October 15th 1805 a Walter Driver Wathen was buried at Kings Stanley.

Regards

Chas

P.S.  On July 7th 1819 a Thomas Wathen Esq. aged 80 of Picked Elms in K.S. was buried.

P.P.S.  On reconsidering the W.D.W. burial I conclude it was in 1806 - sorry about that Smiley
