« on: Saturday 10 November 07 00:40 UTC (UK) »

Ellen Ellis and  Edward Jackson (a butcher born ~1822) had a son (Edward-no other offspring known from this mge) together in 1846 in Manchester Lancs.
Address on birth cert is 4 Tonman St. Manchester

Can anyone help with any info re either Ellen or Edward Snr. I would be eternally grateful

Thank you

Hi Paul,

What was the son's name, do you know if there were any other children, and have you found them in 1851 and later census?

Hi Paul,
Here are some addresses from the Pigots 1845 directory, might help if you are trying to trace them in 1841;

from the surname a-z section
Jackson, Edward, butcher, 12 Alport Shambles; house Peter St
then from searching 'Alpost Shambles'
Dune, John, butcher, 4 Alport Shambles, house 26 Peter St
Fisher, Isaac, butcher, 10 Alport Shambles, house no 6 Peter St

Tonman St shambles and Alport St shambles are the same place, just off Tonman St itself (I checked on the map).

then from the 'Butchers' list:
Jackson, Edward,  12 Tonman St shambles and 16 Albion St, Gaythorn St
Jackson, Edward jnr, 12 Tonman St Shambles and 16 Albion St, Gaythorn St

Albion St/Gaythorn St is a short walk south of Tonman St, Peter St is a short walk north of it.
So maybe your man is Edward junior, with father Edward senior?

Good luck!

Hi Paul,

They don`t want to be found on the 1841 census.  The streets mentioned are on Pieces 569 and 570, BUT (a big but) I  noticed that books 1 to 12 are stated as missing from 570 from the PRO.   Cry  Therefore they won`t have been transcribed.

As you are probably already aware the 1851 for Manchester was water damaged.  If it were me I would start a new thread on the Lancashire Lookup Requests board with  "1851 unfilmed Census" somewhere in the title.  Perhaps some kind soul will be able to find them in the 1851.

Regards,
Mo

Thanks for those replies.
To Barbara, I have a Baines Directory Lancs 1824/25 and it mentions Edward Jackson Butcher in the same area. Given Edward's penchant for naming sons Edward (yes 2! one from a later relationship), I assume his ancestors may have done the same. At least it's a point to work from.
To Dave, thanks mate, I've got to check out this "1851 Deansgate unfilmed HO107/2227" Thanks for the lead.
To Mo, that is bad news about the 1841 but never mind. Thanks for the info.
Thanks again to all, now I'll chase up the wedding of Edward and Ellen.

Thanks very much
