1861 census lookup - Courtnell/Courtnall
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 00:22 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Was hoping someone may be able to look up a fellow called Samuel Courtnall in the 1861 census, I think he will be in the London or Surrey area. I do not have a date of birth but think he may be married and died as follows:

Marriage
Dec Q 1860 Marylebone
Samuel Courtnall and either Phoebe Lancefield or Maria Mason

Death
Dec Q 1862 Islington
Samuel Courtnell (no age)

Any help would be great in locating this fellow, am particularly interested in Phoebe Lancefield too.

Thanks  Smiley

Thanks Iria,

That looks good.....It seems he did marry Phoebe Lancefield in 1860. She was previously married as follows:

Sept Q 1853
John Lancefield and Phoebe Compton

Could you possibly check the 1851 census for either of these people....I would be so grateful. This is a puzzle that is getting more complicated by the minute  Roll Eyes

Assuming Phoebe was born abt 1805 in Norfolk somewhere....John Lancefield may be born abt 1784 I think (if he is the bloke I think he is!!)

Thanks so much  Grin

Hi Iria,

John Lancefield was a mariner, so knowing my luck he was on the high seas during census time  Roll Eyes I have never found him in 1841 or 1851 I suspect that he died in 1855, so no hope on later census returns. Could you possibly give me the details of the 1776 one in Lambeth just in case though?

Thanks again

Thanks for the info, I have so many John Lancefield's bobbing around that I get myself confused at the best of times. A relative and I are trying to sort them all out  Roll Eyes

As far as I can tell my John Lancefield was born approx 1784 and married an Elizabeth (?) and had 3 daughters, Frances b. 1814 Southwark, Elizabeth Esther b. 1817 St Olave d. 1821 and Eliza b. 1821 St John Horsleydown, London.

He may have remarried a Mary I suppose but I have no deaths for either John (except my suspect 1855) or Elizabeth. I have a remarriage for a John Lancefield widower in 1838 to Eliza Clayton at St Olave, and I suspect this is him so if you find a John and Eliza in 1841 please let me know as I would be so greatful! Lancefield is terribly transcribed though, I have seen it as Lanafield, Lansfield, Lanefield and many others..

Thanks again
