Patrick Flynn, Farmer, Cavan
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 17:14 UTC (UK) »

All I have is the heading Patrick Flynn, Farmer, Cavan who gave his age as 80 years in the 1901 census and was at that time married to Anne aged 60 years and living in Crockawaddy, Co Leitrim with his son John. Any information?

Since Patrick, wife Anne and possibly son John? were before the start of civil registration of births in Ireland you will probably need to find church records (if they still exist) to find details of the family. The LDS catalogue (www.familysearch.org) was some microfilmed church records listed. If you find the ones you need the films can be ordered for a small fee from your local LDS library and viewed there.
Civil registration of Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for Protestant ones) so without more details it's hard to know whether or not you'd get a marriage certificate.

Thank you for the response. On the 1901 census Patrick was aged 80 years and Anne 60 years - John was then 30 years. I appreciate these may not be exact. It would look like, because of there respective birth years, Patrick and Anne would have married before the dates you mention (1864 in this instance) although John being born circa 1871 confuses things a bit - was it a late marriage or did they have many other children!?. Do you know the date when Civil registration of births commenced in Ireland?

Civil registration of births began in 1864.
Doing a parent search on IGI (father- Patrick Flynn, mother Anne) shows 23 possible births- 2 of them are for a child John who may or may not be the one in the census.
Probably the best chance of getting information is church records. You can search LDS catalogue and see if the church records have been microfilmed. If so you can order them from your local LDS library for a small fee to view there.
Crockawaddy townland is in the Civil Parish of Drumreilly, Poor Law Union of Bawnboy and Barony of Carrigallen. You will probably need this information if you continue searching through Irish records.
My guess would be that John was possibly the youngest child in the family and remained at home while the others went away or got married.

Many thanks for the information. I have all the information on Crockawaddy etc - I started with the library in Ballinamore and was also lucky to get a request in the Leitrim Observer in the Letters to Editor section. This brought about a a deluge of information on my mother's family in Crockawaddy. I have been on the phone to people there who knew  the family and have had letters. We are going over next year to visit and look around. My other source was from the Leitrim-Roscommon site which had an entry in the 1901 census for a Patrick and Anne Flynne and  John Flynne with his wife and with 3 children - one of which we thought was my mother's sister (My mother Ellen Flynn was born in 1907 after that census). I have since had a copy of the 1911 census which shows my mother and others in the name Flynn and that is certainly the right one! I can now say definitely that the Patrick and Anne in the 1901 census are my great grandparents and, therefore, this query on the Cavan site. Once again thanks for the help.
