ANDREW MCKAY *Completed...many many thanks*
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 23:59 GMT (UK) »

ANDREW MCKAY was born 21 May 1821 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and died Aft. 5 September 1865.

He married MARGARET WALKER 13 December 1850 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to look up the 1851 and/or 1861/1871 census' to see if they can find Andrew and his family for me...I am particularly interested in their daughter Margaret (my ggg-grandmother who married Lewis Anderson 1842-1929 on 5 Sept 1865), we think Margaret was born in 1844 before her parents married....and im not sure if there were any other siblings.

Andrews occupation in 1865 was that of a ropemaker.....

Any help most appreciated

cheers
Richard

Hi Wozzle,

I don't think this is the correct family given that my Andrew was born 21 May 1821. christened 25 May 1821, St Nicholas

Margaret nee Walker (apparently the daughter of Alexander Walker & Elizabeth Cumine (Cumming)) was christened 27 Apr 1825, Kininmouth, Aberdeenshire, Scotland - i have seen other reports online of her having married someone name Yule but they have the wrong Margaret.

So the years for the couple you have found don't seem to add up...although the daughter Margaret's year looks plausible.

For the marriage record of Andrew & Margaret we have the following:

5795 - Andrew MCKAY, Margaret WALKER or CUMMINGS, marr, 13 Dec 1850, North Church Blotter Aberdeen, Aberdeen, 1068225

I figured that there might be more than 1 Andrew & Margaret which is why i had asked for various census results.

cheers

Upon further research I have come across the following:

Wife
Margaret Walker
Birth:     < 1805>     <Drainie, Moray, Scotland>
Marriage:     < 1826>     <Drainie, Moray, Scotland>

Husband
James Cumming
Birth:     < 1801>     <Drainie, Moray, Scotland>
Marriage:     < 1826>     <Drainie, Moray, Scotland>

So perhaps Margaret was born a Walker, married a Cumming and then 2nd married Andrew McKay.....so the date/place that I have had previously could be wrong. The date/place sits with what you have found in the 1851 census.

Thoughts anyone ?

Perhaps this will be of some use:

On 5th September 1865, at 7 Wales Street, Aberdeen, after Banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland, Lewis Anderson, seaman (Merchant Service), batchelor, aged 23, of 7 Wales Street, Aberdeen, the son of Lewis Anderson, woodsawyer (journeyman) and Jane Ross, dressmaker.
and Margaret McKay, domestic servant, spinster, aged 21, of 34 George Street, Aberdeen, the daughter of Andrew McKay, ropemaker (journeyman) and Margaret McKay, maiden name Walker (deceased) were married by George Campbell, minister of Free North Church.
Witnesses': James Fraser and Andrew McKay.

Hi There,
I am going to give this another try......if you had have read my answers firstly ..you would have thought me crackers Grin   I had you 2 lovely folk back to front..
anyway...breakfree...you have come around to the fact that the 1851c could be right...
possibly Andrew and Margaret married after being together a few years...not sure.
but anyway....Margaret had already died by 1865    but not Andrew.
I think I have found Andrew's death...in 1891...aged 83yrs, St Nicholas. Ab.   168/01.....0937

I have found him in the 1891c ....a ropespinner,   83yrs, sadly he is a pauper. living at Nelson St, St Nich..this must have been a poorhouse for there are many living there.

I couldn't find him in the 1881.
I found him in the 1871c...
He is the head and alone. at 2 Mitchell Court, St Nich, Ab, 63yrs, ropemaker.
Thats all for now....
JO
MODIFIED

I have found Andrew in the 1861c.....mistranscribed as Andrew McRay
He is living at 17 West North St, St Nich, Ab...53yrs...Rope Maker.....
with his mother!!
Christina McRay.....(McKay)
84yrs, born St Nicholas, Ab...

I wonder if this is them. No mother (Margaret) but she could have died just before the census?

Hi Hume24,
Look at my previous posting....I have modified it..I have him in the 1861, 71, 91
regards,Jo

I have Christian McKay 72 yrs,.in the 1851c living at 171 West N Street, Greyfriars
Living with her husband Hugh 68yrs, Rope maker, born aberdeen.

IGI...
Hugh McKay married Christian Jameson.. 29 NOV 1803   Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland
I will leave it there for now....
Jo..

Hugh 59yrs, (Roper) and Christian 55yrs, are living at Nelson St, in the 1841c......

This is the 1841c for both Andrew McKay and a little Jane McKay.....(so Andrew may have been married before)....
and at the same address is most likely your Margaret Cumming....with  children....
So by the 1851c ....all the children in the 41 census have grown up enough to leave and find work....so your Mrs Margaret Anderson...has lots of half siblings..
1841 Census
Cause Way End Old Machar

WOW  Grin

Tis a mindblower alright what you have found here especially Kenjo and Woozle (and thanks to hume24 for taking the time to have a looksee as well).

Yeah i think you have the right clan here now.

Margaret Walker i think as you have stated married James Cumming (which is why she was listed as either Walker or Cummings on the marriage record).

I would assume there that yes Andrew most like had been married previously as well.

It still doesn't explain however why they took their sweet time to get hitched :-)

At least now i can say that this lot will keep me on my toes....

Many thanks and if theres anything i can do to help with any NZ rellies you might have then by all means ask away.

regards
Richard
