I am researching one William Smailes born c1828. In the 1841 census he was living in Stokesley. In the 1851 census he was still living in Stokesley with the family of his wife-to-be and his place of birth is given as 'Stokesley'.
In the 1861, 1971 and 1891 censuses, he is living in Darlington, Darlington and Sunderland respectively but his place of birth on these three census returns is not Stokesley but they give his wife's and some of their children's birth places as Stokesley.
I have attached images of the three census returns. I think that it looks like 'Snarlsworth' but I cannot find any evidence of a place with that name exisiting around Stokesley or even in North Yorkshire.
Can anybody help with this one?
Also, I have been unable to find him in the 1881 census. If anyone were able to do so, it may shed some more light on things.
