Oneills _ please help!!
« on: Friday 16 November 07 11:35 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for help in finding any records of the oneills from Kilcullen. I have tried desperately to find out about my maternal grandfather William Oneill        ( born C 1893) family history.
My mother's brothers and sisters have visited Kilcullen and say there is a family grave there.  My mum was proud of her Irish roots, but never went over there before she died, which I find sad.  I think that is why I am so desperate to find out.  Unfortunately, her family have all passed away so I have no help there.
According to William's marriage certificate, his father was called Matthew who was a cow doctor ( is that a farmer?) I was also told my grandfather came over to England ' on/ with the colours' and am led to believe it is a horse racing term.
I would really be grateful for ANY information on the Oneills. Smiley

'cow doctor' sounds more like a vet or perhaps a farmer who did a bit of animal doctoring- probably without any sort of formal training.
'with the colours' usually means in the military.
If you get a birth certificate for William O'Neill it will list exact date of birth and names of both parents.
Other option is to find church records (if they still exist) and search for baptisms, etc. for the family. Try searching for church records in LDS catalogue- if they've been microfilmed you can order the film from your local LDS library for a small fee to view there.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate your advice.  i have to confess i am not sure how I go about getting bmd records as I know that many were destroyed.  Would it be Dublin that hold them or kildare?
My grandfather fought in ww1 and was with the lancashire Fusiliers.
I often go on the LDS site but didn't realise they have church records. Thank you again.

On www.familysearch.org click on link for the catalogue and then 'place search' to look for what records might be available from LDS.
The birth, death and marriage records were not destroyed. It is mainly census records that are lost (some deliberately pulped after population figures were extracted and other by fire in 1920s).
