There's another little square cabin on the hill to the left so maybe they are similar designs.
The gun looks like a double barreled side-by-side twelve-bore or similar- it's the sort of thing grandad had on the farm for sport or rough shooting rather than any military use. Grandad's dated from around 1890-1900 but they still make similar ones today.

OH is in from work so I showed him the picture.....

He has eagle eyes and spotted the shovel to the right of the house....which he says is not an American one as they didn't have handles on them!   But it could be Canada.

Also... he says man on left has turn-ups on his trousers...which didn't come in to fashion untill post 1918.

He also spotted the wood and stuff being stored under the house and thinks the house is real.

And one more from me...if that is a trilby hat - they didn't come in till post 1894.

Well...there isn't much in the photo that says "Canada" to me...it looks more like the American west. Jug of corn liquor in its basket, lovely old cast iron kettle on a cast iron wood stove, just doesn't look very Canadian... Cool

The shotgun is as pointed out a side-by-side construction, probably 12 gauge, which OH thinks looks more North American than European. They were made by the million and could be by any one of a dozen manufacturers...not much in the way of clues there, I'm afraid...

Cheers,

Many thanks for the ideas & comments.  Here's why I think it's Canada.

James Veronelly (aka VERONELLI) was born in Lewisham 1869.  He must have been a bit of a bad lad as he ended up in the care of The Royal Philanthropic Farm school at Redhill Surrey.  Eventually, with their assistance, he emigrated to Canada in 1887. James travelled aboard the 'Circassian' to Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He settled in the town of Grenfell. Sask.

He & his young wife had a terrible start but James eventually  became a farmer & had 4 children. I am in touch with this line of the family.

I think the picture  may have been taken around 1920 & that James is the chap on the left.  There is a book called 'Grit & Growth The story of Grenfell' in which there is a tiny picture of James & the resemblance is quite striking...from what I can see!!!  But I'm still only guessing that this picture was taken in Canada.

Thanks for looking Wink
