Little Paxton/George Dickins
« on: Friday 05 September 08 22:20 BST (UK) »

I'm trying to find the birth and death of George Dickins or Dickens. He married Mary Barham in 1820 , they had 5 children from 1821 to 1831 but he has died before 1837.  Mary was born in Eaton Socon in 1798 and appears as a widow in 1841 census.

Any help appreciated.

On the BVRI there's a George Dickens born (no baptism date given) at Little Paxton on 13 Aug 1798, son of Henry and Prudence.

But I can't find the 1820 marriage in either Hunts or Beds, which hopefully will provide the link to Lt Paxton, although naming a son Henry is encouraging

Nor can I find a burial of George Dickens in either Hunts or Beds,

I don't think you can necessarily assume that because George wasn't with Mary in 1841 she was a widow. In 1841 many ag labs were away from home working so were missed from the census. That's the reason the census date was changed from June to the end of March. So it might be prudent to extend his death range to 1851 when Mary was stated to be a widow

Hello David

Your information is much appreciated. The marriage between George and Mary is taken from a
microfiche of marriages at Little Paxton but it was very hard to read and I may have used some
optimistic guesswork.

I'll extend my search for the death of George to 1851.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi David

Found the marriage now - it was on 10 Nov 1818 at Lt Paxton. The BVRI has BARRAM, whereas Hunts Marriage Index has 1818 BORRAM. BARHAM seems a good compromise!

Don't know how I missed it as Geo Dickens was pretty plain- perhaps I was just looking at 1820
