John EDGELL d. 1933 buried Freston Suffolk
« on: Saturday 17 November 07 18:04 GMT (UK) »

I visited Freston Church today to look for evidence of part of my family research. I was unsuccessful but while I was there I came across a memorial inscribed

John Edgell
Priest
Died Fed 4th. 1933 Aged 90 years
Jesu Mercy
Mary Elizabeth Edgell
Died Aug 9th. 1948 aged 98 years.

The reason I spotted this was because it is a metal plaque on a wooden post - the post is broken and has been put to one side (lying on the ground) close to where the churchyard debris is thrown. Sad
I have photographed it so that if anyone wants the image there is a record before it rots away completely.
Please contact me if this is of interest to you.

My, you were quick!

I had just started to look through the census returns to do the very same thing!

Perhaps the Berkshire board would be a better 'home' for this.

Yes, there is a strong Berkshire connection isn't there. There's also a connection to Suffolk, of course - John Edgell was laid to rest in Freston as you discovered and his younger siblings were born in Uggleshall.

I can't find John's parents in the 1851 Census, but I know now who they were...

Hi Dave

This is all absolutely fascinating. I just hope that it rings a bell with someone so that the photograph (and your information) will find a good home.

I have sent an email to BerksFHS so hopefully the info. will go on file for future researchers.

Many thanks for taking such an interest and for all the background info. which has allowed John Edgell to become an individual again, rather than just a name on a broken memorial.

Regards
