Emily STARNS
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 14:14 BST (UK) »

Hi,
My 3x gt grandmother was Emily Starns. She was born in Haverhill.
Can anyone help me with the meaning and origin of the surname Starns. It doesn't appear to be an English surname.
Emily married Dan Goodman in 1859. Any information on the name Starns and the Starns in Suffolk would be very helpful. Thanks.

Tempsford.

Have you tried alternative spellings?

The IGI throws up numerorous variations such as Starnes, Stearns, Sterns etc.

Hi Findem,
Yes I know about the different spellings but my family stuck to Starns after 1800!
I really want information about the origin of the name and its meaning. I read online about the name having German origins and wondered if it was true. But it does seem as if it was orginally Stearn.
Thanks.

Hi tempsford

If you put STEARNS in the search engine at this site, I think it will answer your question.
