From the dates it seems extremely likely that the first date was the date of the entry into the banns book.

Wozzle & Dave, sorry I didn't notice your replies earlier Embarrassed. Wozzle, I've just double checked and the earlier entry has gone, I definitely wasn't seeing things earlier Shocked. Dave, did you see the earlier date or did you take my word for it ? your explaination makes sense, do you know if bans get transcibed as marriages often and by mistake or as a rule ? Alan

I took the date from your post.  The confusion between marriages and banns tended to happen before 1754 when the printed marriage register was brought into use and a seperate banns register instigated.  Prior to that they were often written in the same book and occasionally intermingled.

However in 1812 the requirement for a banns register was dropped although most parishes continued to use a banns book.  What you will however find is that the details from some banns books were included in the IGI and some other transcriptions leading to later confusion and the double dates.

Thanks for that David, now I know why, but it's still a mystery how I got the two dates up at the same, I tried every combination of search I could think of to do it again, without success. Never mind. Alan. Wink  Smiley
