Hi all I received a multitude of information from a friendly chap on Suffolk Sirnames and one piece immediately grabbed my attention : "On the last day of the year (1840) the death occurred of 75 year old Nehemiah Rogers, whoseancestor, John Rogers, was the first martyr to be burned at the stake on 4th February 1555 in the reign of Queen Mary " ( From "Early Nineteenth Century Sudbury written and published by Allan W. Berry 2002. ,,,,, I have a couple of Nehemiah's in my tree I thought, and innocently subtracted 75 from 1840 and came up with a birth year of 1765,,,, feverishly I search through my piles of paperwork and there he was ,,, Nehemiah Rogers, born 1765, christened 11-6-1765 to Nehemiah Rogers and Sarah (unknown), st Gregory, Sudbury,Suffolk. I have him passing on in 1841, but that may come from a burial record ( after the last day of the year ) If this is true then I suddenly leap frog from the 1690's to 1555 and then on to around 1280, if what I have found on internet is correct. Oh joy of joys !!!!!! All this research is worth all the headaches !!!! The quote I have has a note 3, which I guess will lead to the origin of this information. I have had no joy in tracking down a copy of this book as of yet, but maybe someone out there has a copy and can look it up for me. Or maybe someone knows of another reference to this ?? I hope that someone can help me prove this new link. Many thanks in advance and all the best Pete Rogers ( smiling like a Cheshire cat or what !!!)

I wonder how he came to have such a grand tomb, from what you say the family wasn't a rich one. It must have cost a pretty penny in the 1840s. Maybe some benefactor thought he was worth it. Just so annoying trying to read it.
I think the first line of the inscription may have been in Latin. Maybe when you get to see it, you'll have better luck reading it. You could try the night time trick with a torch.

You may find Abebooks.co.uk is also good for sourcing old Suffolk books.
Unfortunately one of the best independent book shops that I always recommended has closed down. Now there is one independent bookshop in town and a good second hand book shop off North Street (I have a nasty habit of not being able to just walk past - I am compelled to enter) There is a branch of a national book retailer - but despite asking many times, they still stock a very small selection of local books - in fact that section just seems to have Ordnance Survey maps of the area
If you intend to visit the Sudbury area there are also bookshops nearby in Lavenham and in Long Melford. Both of which are well worth a visit anywayz.
Allan Berry has written several books on the Sudbury/Great Cornard area.
The fact that Nehemiah was baptised at Saint Gregory's would indicate that is where his parents were living at the time of his birth and his death some years later a mile down the road at All Saints reflects where he was living when he died. We also have St Peter's in the centre of town - unfortunately it is a redundant church, but it hosts all the charity sales, craft fairs, Farmers Markets and Christmas fairs.
You can read more on all Sudbury's churches (and I think when I did the Suffolk Church Bike Ride a few years ago I called in at 13 that were taking part in the charity event), at www.suffolkchurces.co.uk and there is a page about redundant Suffolk churches at www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk
