CRITTEN/CRITTON/CRETTEN - Family
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 16:58 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information about members of my family named Critten/ Critton/Cretten and other derivatives thereof who I know were baptised and or buried at Ellough, Suffolk, England or the surrounding parishes during the late 1600's and early 1700's.

The family has old roots back to Southwold in the 1720's and in particular we are trying to track down a John Critton who was married to Christian Francis about 1744. (Southwold)

His parents could well have been William Critten born about 1694 son of Nicholas Critten

Any help or assistance would be much appreciated

Ade Critten

Hi Sue

Thanks for this help.
How do I get to look at Boyds marriage index, I haven't been there before! can you get page copies etc? where do I go?

I know that John and xtian are the parents of the basis of our family tree as you will see from the enclosed copy of the baptism notes from 1744 it clearly states John and Christiana are his parents.

This is where we are now struggling to go back further as we could do with knowing exactly where this John has come from, I have good reason to believe he will be the son of William possibbly tthe William Critton you mention born 1719.

As I say I really do appreciate your assistance with this.

Kind regards

Ade

Another thing that is perplexing me is where did Christiana come from??

I have the Carlton Colville parish registers and there are no families named Francis there from 1710 onwards, but I have been lead to believe that generally marriages took place in the parish of the bride!!
The baptism notes I have posted fro her and John as being named as parents of William bap 1744 are from North Cove, the marriage of 1742 is spot on.

Good morning Sue

What a deightfull start to this otherwise very miserable day here on the Isle of Man.

This info is great!! is it from the parish registers? if so it seems that I must order the Kessingland and Henstead Parish Records too!!

The Henstead John Critten is also very intreaguing, this could possibly equate to the grandfather of John Critten husband of Christiana.

Please tell me where you are getting this info from?

I'm on MSN as I see you are too if you wanted to talk through IM

Thanks a lot for this Sue Grin

Best wishes

Sue,

Thanks for your interest

Can I enquire is there any way of finding out if this William Critten above (1719) is possibly the brother of John Critten who married Christiana Francis?

The son of John and Christiana was named William so I'm thinking that John and Christiana Critten/Critton would normaly have had more children anyway but its generally par for the course that the eldest gets named after the father isn't it?
Could it be that John and Christiana had another son named John who possibly died at birth or did they name the only child they had after his brother?

William Critten was baptised on the 14th November 1744 @ North Cove, Suffolk, England but I,m not sure at which church?

I have not been able to find any other children to this marriage and have the feeling that Christiana died bef 1750 as there is a marriage for a John Critten to a Susan Algar on 4th July1750 in Carlton Colville where they are both stated as being widow and widower.

It makes me think that poor Christian died giving birth to William or even twins especially as there are no other children it seems!!

My problem is that I cannot find a death or a burial for Christian Critten about 1744 or at any other time anywhere??

Another thing that is perplexing me is where did Christiana come from??
